MARSHALL, Texas – Winning their last four games in a row, the East Texas Baptist University women's basketball team will be taking on Sul Ross State and and Howard Payne University in Ornelas Gym this weekend. ETBU is 6-3 at home and is 16-5 overall receiving votes in the national poll. The first NCAA Division III Region 10 Rankings also came out this week listed in alphabetical order and ETBU is one of the eight teams in the rankings.
Coming in at 10-4 in the American Southwest Conference tied for second with the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, ETBU defeated LeTourneau, 61-47, last Saturday shooting 38% overall. They had to come from behind putting together a strong defensive fourth quarter for the 14-point win.
Jade Goynes led the team with 16 points going 10-for-10 at the free throw line.
Leading ETBU is
Bridget Upton,
Mollie Dittmar, and Goynes. Upton is currently leading the team with 253 points averaging 12 points per game. Against LETU, she recorded five points and four rebounds. She is shooting 46% overall, is 38% beyond the arc, and 76% on the line. She is also averaging 4.5 rebounds per game and has recorded 37 assists.
Dittmar leads the team with 141 rebounds averaging 6.7 per game which is seventh in the ASC. She also leads the team in shooting at 64%. Against LETU, she recorded eight points, six rebounds, and one block. This season, she has 197 points averaging 9.4 points per game.
Goynes leads the team and ASC in free throw shooting at 86% and is averaging a team best 14.7 points per game. She is currently shooting 45% and 36% beyond the arc. She has recorded 81 rebounds averaging 5.4 per game.
ETBU will be facing Sul Ross State on Thursday, February 9th at 5:30 pm. Sul Ross is currently 14-8 overall and 10-5 in the ASC. The two teams last played in January, where the Lobos won, 71-58, in Alpine. The Tigers last came out victorious in December 2021 vs. the Lobos, 59-41. Leading Sul Ross State is Marley Rokas with 321 points averaging 14.6 per game and is shooting 42%. SHe also leads the team with 173 rebounds averaging 3.9 per game.
Howard Payne will be in Ornelas on Saturday, February 11th at 1:00 pm for Senior Day. HPU is currently 2-20 overall and 0-15 in the ASC. The two teams last played in January as the Tigers won, 92-56. HPU last ETBU in December 2016, 90-72. Leading the Yellowjackets is Bria Neal with 264 points averaging 12.6 points per game and is shooting 37%. She is averaging 8.6 rebounds per game with 181 rebounds.
