MARSHALL, Texas – In two extremely different games, #8 East Texas Baptist University swept Illinois Wesleyan moving to 14-1 on the year. ETBU won, 7-6, in extra innings in game one and then took game two, 6-0, in five innings. ETBU now has now won 10 games in a row.
Toni Tamborello earned the win in game one in relief for her first win of the year.
Ashley Croft moved to 6-0 with the win in game two and two strikeouts.
Courtney White led the team with four hits and added two RBI.
Corley Carpenter,
Marin Musicant, and
Tristen Maddox all had two RBI.
Game 1
ETBU 7, IWU 6 (8 innings)
In extra innings, Maddox singled in
Hannah A. Kelley for the walk-off win in the bottom of the eighth inning. Kelley reached on an error to start the inning and ended up at second base. After
Mary Frances Ellis sacrificed her at-bat to put Kelley on third, Maddox came through for the win.
Hannah Kelley started the game and recorded three strikeouts and one earned run in the no decision. Tamborello came in the sixth inning after IWU took a 6-5 lead and recorded the third out three batters in. She went on to receive her first win of the game after ETBU tied the game in the bottom of the seventh winning it in the eighth.
Maddox and Musicant led the team with two hits each. Carpenter and Musicant both had two RBI while Maddox,
Delanie Loya, and
Hannah A. Kelley all had one RBI. Loya recorded the only home run while Carpenter added a double.
After three scoreless innings, IWU struck first in the top of the fourth inning. Loya homered to left field in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at one. In the bottom of the fifth, ETBU added three more runs for a 4-1 lead. Musicant singled in Maddox for a 2-1 lead. Carpenter then doubled to left center field to make it a three-run game, 4-1, as
Allison Damiani and Loya scored.
IWU responded in the top of the sixth inning with a grand slam home run to move ahead of the Tigers, 5-4. In the bottom of the seventh, with one out, Musicant singled in the tying run as Torin Cummnigs came in. ETBU had a chance to win it in the seventh with runners at second and third with one out but a ground out and fly out ended the inning as the game went to extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, IWU had a runner placed on second with the international baseball rules. She advanced to third on a sac bunt but was then thrown out at home on a fielder's choice. On the next play, though, IWU scored on a single to left center field but the final out came as the Titans second runner tried to score and was thrown out at home to end the inning.
Mallory Pyle was placed on second for the extra innings rule. She then became the tying run as A. Kelley reached on a throwing error from third base making it a deadlock at six. With A. Kelley on second after the error,
Mary Frances Ellis advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Maddox then stepped up and ended the game on the walk-off single to the short top for the extra inning win, 7-6.
Game 2
ETBU 6, IWU 0 (5 innings)
Ending due to rain at the bottom of the fifth inning, ETBU moved to 14-1 on the year with the 6-0 victory. Croft went five innings for the win with two strikeouts allowing just four hits in the shutout win. White and A. Kelley went 3-for-3 in the game as White added two RBI. Maddox also recorded two RBI as Croft and A. Kelley recorded one RBI.
ETBU scored in all four innings played starting with two runs in the bottom of the first. White doubled in Maddox for the first run followed and then came in on a Croft single. In the second inning, White singled up the middle scoring A. Kelley for a 3-0 lead. Maddox made it 5-0 in the third inning on a two RBI double to right center field. A. Kelley finished off the scoring in the fourth inning as Pyle came in for the 6-0 lead. After IWU's threat was stopped in the top of fifth two runners on, the game was halted due to rain and then called as ETBU won, 6-0.
ETBU will take on #17 Eastern Connecticut State on Friday at 4:00 p.m.
