MARSHALL, Texas – Headed to their seventh straight American Southwest Conference men's tennis championship tournament, East Texas Baptist is the no. 2 seed from the East Division. They open up the tournament on Thursday morning at 8:00 a.m. vs. Mary Hardin-Baylor who is the no. 3 seed from the West Division.
"This year only six teams made the ASC Tournament so there is definitely a lot of teams that didn't make the tournament that are quality teams. It's exciting for us to be in the upper echelon of the conference and we are excited for the challenge," said head coach
Drew Lambert.
ETBU has 10 wins on the year which is the most in program history surpassing the record of seven wins set three different times. It is the fifth time that ETBU has been the no. 2 seed from the East Division. They won their first ASC Tournament match in 2016 advancing to the semi-finals taking the victory over Concordia Texas. Their other ASC Tournament win came in 2018 in the first round vs. Mary Hardin-Baylor, 5-3.
Winning five of their last seven matches, ETBU has played the tough competition this season pushing them to make a run in the ASC Tournament. They have taken on West Coast teams in Pacific University, WIlliamette, George Fox, University of Puget Sound, and Lewis & Clark over spring break along with playing NAIA's Texas Wesleyan and NCAA Division II Dallas Baptist.
ETBU faced Mary Hardin-Baylor on March 4 in Marshall, Texas, and fell, 3-6. Overall, they are just 1-8 in the series vs. the Crusaders with the only win coming in 2018 at the ASC Tournament.
The winner of the match will advance on to the semi-finals facing Hardin-Simmons on Friday at 10:00 a.m.
