RICHARDSON, Texas – Down 2-1 after the doubles matches, East Texas Baptist University came up short in singles play at the American Southwest Conference Men's Tennis Championship Tournament as they fell to Mary Hardin-Baylor, 5-3. ETBU ends their season at 10-10 winning the most matches in program history.
Mary Hardin-Baylor took a 1-0 lead after an 8-5 in doubles no.2 as
Sam Black and
Bruno Ferraro Brocanelli fell to Brylee White and Spencer Hornbeck.
Jake Gibson and
Jacob Daniell then fell in the no.1 match, 8-5, to Nicolas Cusano and Joaquim Fernandes.
Max Karseno and
Zachary Couch gained the first point of the match in an 8-7 (7-3) tiebreaking victory.
UMHB added two more points moving the score to 4-1 to start singles play. In the no. 5 match, UMHB's Drew Gonzales won, 6-1, 6-0, over Austin Slade. Ethan Kittredge then held off ETBU's Gibson, 6-4, 6-4, in the no.4 match. Brocanelli gave ETBU their second point cutting the lead to two, 4-2, with a 7-5, 6-4, win at no.2. Black then took then no.1 match over UMHB's Fernandes, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, in a tiebreaker to come within one, 4-3. The match ended when Karseno fell at no.3 6-7 (7-1), 6-2, after a close tiebreaker in set one.
Zachary Couch was up, 6-2, after set one at no.6 when the match ended.
This was the seventh year in a row that ETBU has made the ASC Tournament and they finish with a program best 10 wins.
