BELTON, Texas –
Hannah Kelley's two-hit shutout performance advanced #9 East Texas Baptist University to the American Southwest Conference championship game as they defeated McMurry University, 4-0. ETBU needs to win just one game on Saturday for the ASC Championship. They are now 37-5 on the year.
Kelley earned her 15
th win of the year going all seven innings recording four strikeouts and just two hits. She retired the first 12 batters of the game before McM broke up the perfect game in the fifth inning. The other hit of the game came in the seventh inning.
Courtney White went 3-of-3 with all four RBI in the game. Both
Corley Carpenter and
Mary Frances Ellis had two hits. Ellis scored twice on the day.
ETBU threatened in the second inning after a scoreless first as they had a runner on third but couldn't get her in. White made it 1-0 in the third inning with one out as she doubled in Ellis. In the fourth inning, with two outs and the bases loaded, White singled to the outfield as Ellis,
Mallory Pyle, and Braelynn Buchanan all scored to make it 4-0.
McMurry recorded their first hit, a double, in the top of the fifth with one out. The next two batters popped out to end the threat as ETBU maintained a 4-0 lead. The Warhawks went 1-2-3 in the sixth inning but made a little noise in the final inning. After the first out, there was a single and then a fielder's choice to put two runners on. Kelley proceeded, once again, to get the next two batters to fly out and end the game.
ETBU will play for the championship on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. against either UMHB, LeTourneau, or McMurry. They will be seeking their 11
th ASC Championship playing in their 15
th championship game, This will also be the third straight year they have played for the championship winning it in 2021.
