MARSHALL, Texas – Another prestigious award has been given to the East Texas Baptist University baseball program as Sayers Collins has been named the Society of American Baseball Research (SABR) Metroplex Carroll Beringer College Division Player of the Year. Collins is the third baseball player to earn this award for the baseball program following Conner Combs (2016) and Casey Combs (2019).

This award is also named along with the Howard Green SABR Metroplex Division I Player of the Year award who went to Texas Christian University's Brayden Taylor. These prestigious collegiate baseball awards honor the memory of longtime DFW SABR president Howard Green and Carroll Beringer, former big league pitching coach who was a great supporter of college baseball in the area.

Below is the release from the organization.

Collins produced arguably the top 2023 season and all-time best career showing for ETBU as a 6-3, 250-pound senior righthander from Frisco, Texas.

The '23 ABCA All-America first teamer and American Southwest Conference Pitcher of the Year rolled to a 12-2 mound mark with a 2.64 earned run average, 16 starts, four complete games, school-record 135 strikeouts in 99 innings pitched, 32 walks issued, and 72 hits allowed. Opponents batted .199 against him as he paced the Tigers to a 42-15 overall record under coach Jarred Hood.

Collins also was second team All-America by D3Baseball.com, first team All-Region 10, the Region 10 Pitcher of the Year, and first team All-ASC as a senior. His 2022 outing produced ABCA West Region Pitcher of the Year, ABCA All-Region, ASC Pitcher of the Year, and All-ASC laurels.

The senior righthander set an American Southwest Conference career standards with 10 ASC Pitcher of the Week kudos, ETBU strikeouts with 329 and victories with 29. His 12 wins in '23 represented another Tigers single-season mark/

The two standouts join an elite list of previous SABR Howard Green and Carroll Beringer selections such as future MLB players and college standouts Scott Malone of TCU, Hunter Pence of UT Arlington, Darick Hall of DBU, Elvin Rodriguez of Northwood, Conner and Casey Combs of East Texas Baptist, and the only two-time recipient of either award – A.J. Liu of UT Dallas.

"These two young men set the standard for college players on the greater DFW Metroplex," said Banks-Bragan SABR Chapter President Paul Rogers. "Their on the field performances and off-field leadership and character make them very worthy winners of these honors.
