MARSHALL, Texas - The top two American Southwest Conference volleyball programs faced off in Ornelas Gym as East Texas Baptist University took the five-set victory over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, 21-25, 25-20, 25-21, 24-26, 15-5. ETBU moved to 9-2 on the year and 3-0 in the ASC as they handed UMHB their first loss of the year.
ETBU finished with 70 kills in the game as
Graycee Mosley collected a career-high 32 kills and had another double-double with 17 digs.
Avery Reid added 20 kills and nine digs while
Lillie Hill had 27 digs.
Grace Williamson finished with eight total blocks and
Hannah Perry had seven combined blocks.
UMHB held off ETBU in set one, 25-21. ETBU was up, 9-5, before UMHB went on a 6-0 run for an 11-9 lead. ETBU answered to take the 12-11 lead on a
Lexi Moody kill only to see UMHB add another 5-0 run making it 16-12. An UMHB attack error tied the game at 18 but UMHB scored the next four points going up 22-18. A Moody kill pulled ETBU within one, 22-21, but UMHB scored the final three points for the 25-21 win.
Set two mirrored set one only ETBU took the win, 25-20. There were three ties in the first 10 points as it was 5-5 before ETBU scored three straight points with kills from Mosley and Moody for an 8-5 lead. ETBU started to pulled going up 14-10 on a Mosley kill. UMHB came within two, 21-19, but ETBU scored the final four of five points to tie the match at one set each.
Going up two sets to one, ETBU won set three, 25-21. Down 3-0, they came back to tie the set at four with two kills by
Hannah Perry. There were three ties after that with the last at seven. ETBU scored five of the next six points for a 12-8 lead with two Mosley kills. UMHB was within one, 18-17, but a kill by Mosley and two attack errors from UMHB made it 21-17. ETBU was up, 22-20, but won the set with a bad UMHB set and two straight Mosley kills to go up, 2-1.
It was a battle in set four as ETBU fell, 26-24. ETBU was down 11-7 but came back to tie the set at 13 on a Mosley kill as she had three in the run. A block by Hancock made it 19-17 for ETBU and then a Reid kill put the lead still at two, 21-19. ETBU was up one, 23-22 as UMHB scored two for a 24-23 lead. A Perry kill tied the set at 24 but a UMHB kill and ETBU attack error gave the Cru the win tying the match at two sets each.
It was all ETBU in set five going up 5-0 with three kills from Reid. UMHB scored one to come within four but ETBU scored five straight points with three Mosley kills and one Reid kill for the 10-1 lead. UMHB scored three straight to pull within six, 10-4, but ETBU scored five of the next six points with kills from Moody, Mosley, and Perry with two service aces from
McKenzie Mansell for the match win, 15-5.
ETBU will host LeTourneau University on Tuesday for another ASC match at 6:00 p.m.
