Bringing Passion and Purpose to the Soccer Field: Kristin Cox's Journey at ETBU
Making a profound impact on her team and East Texas Baptist University as a whole,
Kristin Cox is in her fifth year as the head coach for women's soccer. With a deep love for soccer and a passion for academics, Cox's journey to ETBU has been a journey leading to a place she calls home.
A Beginning Fueled by Determination
Growing up in West Texas, Cox developed a love for soccer at an early age. However, playing at a high level meant traveling two hours each way to practices and games. Her dedication and hard work paid off as she honed her skills and competed in the top league in the Dallas area. Playing with a group of talented individuals who all went on to play college soccer, Cox cherished the experience of being part of a team that aspired to greatness.
A Versatile Athlete and Scholar
Cox's athletic journey did not end in high school. She went on to play volleyball at Lubbock Christian University (LCU) but soon realized that her true passion lay in soccer. She made the switch and played for LCU's soccer team for five years. As a student-athlete, Cox recognized the importance of balancing sports and academics. Her love for learning led her to pursue not just one, but four degrees: two undergraduate degrees in accounting and finance, a master's degree in Leadership, and an MBA from ETBU. Cox's thirst for knowledge and academic challenge fueled her ambition to excel both on and off the field.
Discovering a Passion for Coaching at ETBU
Cox's journey at ETBU began unexpectedly. She was not familiar with the university until a friend recommended her for an assistant coaching position. Despite initially having no plans to pursue coaching, Cox was drawn to the university's Christ-centered environment and the opportunity to combine her occupation with ministry. Working under Erik Solberg, the head coach at the time, Cox found herself appreciating and embracing the deep-rooted mission of ETBU. Solberg not only entrusted her with significant responsibilities but also mentored her to become a capable leader.
A Promising Coaching Career Takes Flight
When Solberg left ETBU, Cox was promoted to head coach—an opportunity she eagerly embraced. In the past five seasons, she has been instrumental in shaping the women's soccer program at ETBU. With a focus on cultivating a Christ-centered and competitive program, Cox has instilled core values of love, gratitude, and devotion in her team. The players' unwavering commitment to Christ and their sport has created a unique atmosphere within the team—one that goes beyond victories and defeats on the soccer field.
Merging Faith and Athletics through Mission Trips
ETBU offers its athletes the opportunity to participate in athletic mission trips, combining their passion for sports with their dedication to spreading the Gospel. Cox, with her background in missions, recognizes the impact these trips can have on her players both on and off the field. During a recent trip to New Zealand, several players experienced a spiritual transformation and made the decision to be baptized. These experiences deepen the players' connection with each other and create a strong bond that extends far beyond their time on the soccer field.
A Home for the Cox Family
ETBU holds a special place in Cox's heart not only because of her coaching career but also because it is where she met her husband, Chad Cox, the head men's soccer coach. The couple, both dedicated coaches and proud parents of two young boys, have found a home at ETBU. The university's Christ-centered focus, along with the overwhelming support from the administration, has solidified ETBU as the perfect place to raise their family and build lasting relationships.
Looking Ahead
Cox's dedication and passion have propelled the women's soccer program at ETBU to new heights. With each passing season, she strives to create a team culture that embraces excellence, not just in soccer but in academics and faith as well. Under her guidance, the team has become a tight-knit family, united by a common purpose and a commitment to grow in Christ.
As the head coach of the women's soccer program at ETBU,
Kristin Cox has left an indelible mark on her team, the university, and the lives of those she has touched. Her journey is a testament to the power of passion, determination, and a strong faith. ETBU is not just a place to play soccer; it is a home where athletes can grow, thrive, and fulfill their potential.
