MARSHALL, Texas—A homecoming victory took place at Ornelas Stadium, as East Texas Baptist University ran away with a 55-6 win over Westgate Christian University. ETBU is now 5-1 on the year. The win counts for the Tigers, but it will not be recognized by the NCAA because WCU is not a sanctioned opponent.
ETBU had 471 yards of total offense with 228 yards rushing and 243 yards passing. The Tigers played 100 players using four different quarterbacks as eight players ran the ball with 13 players receiving a pass.
Ryan McCown was 3-of-8 for 100 yards passing. McCown,
Diego Narezo,
Gemiyea Boyd, and
Kaden Brown all had touchdown passes.
Hymond Drinkard led the rushing attack with three rushes for 159 yards and two touchdowns.
Mason O'Neal had 45 yards rushing and one touchdown. On the receiving end,
Elias Dejean had 85 yards on one catch for a touchdown.
Beau Kilgore, Dejean,
Trayjen Llanas-Wilcox, and
Sawyer Whaley all had touchdowns.
Will Price led the defense with 11 tackles as
Devin Applewhite picked up a sack. Will Bowers also had a sack, and
Jerry Bedford and
Colton Wilson shared one.
Tyler Wilkins and
Kyree Corbin both had interceptions.
Pedro Cavazos kicked two field goals, making them from 37 yards and 47 yards.
ETBU scored 28 points in the first quarter with two rushing and two passing touchdowns. Drinkard scored first on a 52-yard run (13:58), and then made it 14-0 on a 98-yard run (8:08). Llanas-Wilcox caught a 52-yard pass from
Kaden Brown at 5:50 for a 21-0 lead. Kilgore then put ETBU up, 28-0, on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Narezo at 1:21.
Cavazos made his first of two field goals in the second quarter with a 37-yard make at 5:56 for a 31-point lead. Dejean was wide open at 2:06 for an 85-yard touchdown catch from McCown as ETBU went up 38-0. Cavazos finished the quarter as time expired on a 47-yard field goal for a 41-0 lead at the half.
Whaley received a 38-yard touchdown pass from Boyd with 9:17 on the clock in the third quarter to push the lead to 48 points. WCU scored with 2:59 in the third, but ETBU blocked the extra point. O'Neal finished the scoring for ETBU on a five-yard run for the 55-6 final.
ETBU travels to Abilene, Texas, next Saturday, facing No. 6 Hardin-Simmons University at 1:00 p.m.
