RICHARDSON, Texas – A strong second half led to East Texas Baptist University's 75-47 win over Schreiner University. ETBU was only up, 9-5, after the first quarter before outscoring the Mountaineers, 66-42 over the next three quarters. ETBU is now 4-1.
Madison Hurta led the team with 15 points as both
Payton Hicks and
Jayla Hall had 11 points.
Hannah Ayala had 10 rebounds as
Macey Jones added nine.
Kadia Ward added five assists and five rebounds.
ETBU finished shooting 33 percent making six three-pointers (21 percent), and was 19-or-31 from the line (61 percent). Schreiner made just 25 percent of their shots, two three-pointers (11 percent), and was 52 percent from the stripe. ETBU out rebounded SU, 67-39, forced 16 turnovers and had six blocks.
Both teams shot horribly in the first quarter as ETBU had a 9-5 lead. ETBU made three shots for 15 percent shooting while SU had one bucket for 10 percent. The offenses heated up in the second quarter as ETBU had a 27-20 lead at the half. SU had a five-point lead, 15-10, five minutes into the quarter on a 10-1 run. At the 4:19 mark, SU made it a six-point lead, 18-12, on a three-pointer. In the final four minutes, ETBU went on a 15-2 run for the seven-point lead. Hurta had six of the 15 points and Ward gave ETBU the lead, 19-18, at 1:44 off a block and fast break layup.
ETBU scored 48 points in the second half holding SU to just 27 points blowing out the Mountaineers shooting 42 percent. ETBU started the first three minutes of the third quarter on an 8-0 run for a 15-point lead, 35-20. Hurta made a three-pointer at 2:47 for a 20-point lead, 46-26, and Hicks went 2-of-2 at the line to end the quarter for a 23-point lead, 54-31.
SU cut the lead to 18, 56-38, at 7:07 but Hurta had a three-point play at 6:37 making it 59-38. The lead never went under 20 points from that point on.
Marley Keith gave ETBU their largest lead of 28 with the final bucket of the game, 75-47.
ETBU will take on Rhodes College at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday at Texas Dallas.
