MARSHALL, Texas – Sweeping their first two teams of the 2024 season, East Texas Baptist University came away with two wins in the first day of their Beach Classic. ETBU opened the day with a 3-2 win over Texas Wesleyan and then had a 4-1 win over Ottawa University (Kan.). ETBU is now 3-6 on the year.
 
In match one, Callie Humphrey and Bella Sigala won in two sets, 21-11, 21-11 for the first point. Shelbe Adkins and Madison McDonald then won match two, 21-7, 21-8. Nadia Brockway and Mona Salgado then won set three, 21-7, 21-8 for the three points needed to win the match. ETBU fell in match four in three sets and in two close sets in match five.
 
The final match of the day was a 4-1 win over Ottawa. ETBU won sets one through four for the win. Humphrey and Sigala won 21-10, 17-21, 15-3 for the set one win in three sets. Adkins and McDonald then took set two, 21-12, 21-16. Brockway and Salgado cruised to a 21-12, 21-18 win in set three. Bailee Kitchen and Hannah Perry won their first set together on the day, 21-12, 21-12, in set four. Set five went three sets, 18-21, 21-9, 12-15, as Peyton Fredrick and Kyleigh Pate fell.
 
ETBU will face both teams on Saturday in day two of the Beach Classic.
