TAVARES, Fla. – History is being made in Florida for the East Texas Baptist University beach volleyball team as they move to the winner's bracket of the AVCA Small College Beach Championship. ETBU went 2-1 in pool play advancing to the winner's bracket with Stevenson University (no. 2 seed). Mary Hardin-Baylor (no. 1 seed) and Berry College (no. 4 seed) advance from pool 1 as the four teams will battle for the championship on Sunday.
ETBU is the no. 7 seed in the tournament out of seven teams and defeated the no. 3 seed (Hendrix) and no. 6 seed (Huntingdon).
ETBU started off the day with a 3-2 win over 2023 AVCA Small College Champions Hendrix College. After falling in set one (
Callie Humphrey/
Bella Sigala), 21-15, 21-15, Shelbe Adkins and
Madison McDonald won set two, 21-19, 21-14, to tie the match at one each.
Nadia Brockway and
Mona Salgado then won the no. 3 match, 21-18, 21-19, for the 2-1 lead but Hendrix took the no. 4 match (
Bailee Kitchen/
Hannah Perry), 21-15, 21-16. Coming down to the no. 5 match, Petyon Fredrick and
Kyleigh Pate won in three sets, 22-20, 14-21, 19-17, for the historic win.
In match two of the day, ETBU fell to Stevenson, 3-0. Stevenson won the no. 3 match, 21-13, 21-16, followed by a 21-13, 21-9 win at no. 4, and a 21-13, 21-14 win at no. 5. That forced ETBU to take on Huntingdon to see who would advance.
In their third match of the day, ETBU held off Huntingdon, 3-1. Adkins/McDonald won the no. 2 match, 21-17, 22-20. ETBU made it 2-0 as Brockway/Salgado won the no. 3 match in three sets, 21-13, 17-21, 15-10. Huntingdon cut the lead to one, 2-1, taking the no. 4 match (Kitchen/Perry), 9-21, 21-14, 13-15, but Fredrick/Pate finished off the match in match no. 5, 21-14, 21-7, to advance onto the winner's bracket.
ETBU will face off against Mary Hardin-Baylor at 8:15 a.m. central time on Sunday. If they win they will play for the championship at 12:00 p.m. against the Berry College/Stevenson winner. If they lose, they will play at 12:00 p.m. in the third-place match.
