TAME | MBB | Honduras - Recap #4

5/16/2024 3:19:00 PM

Today's recap from the ETBU Men's Basketball TAME trip to Roatan is provided by Freshman Jace Crawford and Sophomore Michael Roberts.

"This morning we woke up and had breakfast at the Refuge before heading to our last camp with the students at Abundant Life Fellowship. Our hosts have been preparing every meal for us and each one has been amazing. They include a piece of fruit with every meal and the watermelon and pineapple are some of the freshest I've ever had. Once we arrived at the school, we did some basketball drills, different competition relays, and then split into our groups we had formed on the first day of the trip to talk about the Gospel. During our group time it was incredible to see how engaged the kids were to what we were sharing about God's love and servant leadership.

In my (Jace) specific group, I witnessed one of my teammates share about being humble and the kids were more talkative than they had been the entire time in giving examples and truly understanding what humility looks like. Before we left, we had the opportunity to give each of the kids our player cards with a picture of us and our favorite verse on them. All of the kids began to swarm around us wanting our signatures and pictures with them and that was such an incredible opportunity to feel that welcomed and loved with people I had known for such a short amount of time.

Our last thing for the day was to play our first game against the team we had been working with the last couple of evenings. Before the game started we handed out some ETBU Basketball shirts and stickers to the guys. We won the game, but the coolest experience was getting to connect one last time after the game and take pictures, talk about life, and connect with each player on a level outside of just basketball. We then headed back to the refuge for dinner and debrief.

During our debrief time, we discussed how God has moved during this trip not just in other peoples lives but in ours. We have been ending every night with different people sharing their six H's (Honey, Horrible Hygiene Habit, Hero, Heartache, Highlight, Hope). This has been a really cool experience because a lot of the guys have opened up more than I would have ever imagined and has allowed us to grow closer not just as a team but as a family. As we are nearing the end of the trip I am excited to see what else the Lord has in store for us here in Roatan."
