MARSHALL, Texas – Moving onto the Marshall, Texas Regional Championship game, no. 2 East Texas Baptist University pounded out 16 hits while only allowing three hits as they dominated no. 9 Texas Lutheran University, 12-0. ETBU heads to their eight regional championship game in program history on Saturday and are now 40-2 on the year.
The 12 runs is the most in program history scored in a NCAA Tournament game topping 11 runs scored twice. It is also the ninth time that ETBU has shut out a team in the NCAA Tournament.
Tristen Maddox and
Courtney White both had three hits while
Tauryn Cummings,
Izabella Morales, and
Mary Frances Ellis added two hits. Maddox led the way with four RBI and a home run. Cummings also recorded a home run and three RBI.
Haylie Stum added two RBI while Ellis had one RBI.
Avery Holland pitched a gem allowing just three hits with four strikeouts moving to 11-0 on the year. Facing 26 batters, she walked just two and retired the side four times and at one point nine batters in a row.
After two scoreless innings, ETBU broke through in the top of the third inning with two runs. Both
Mallory Pyle and Morales came home on a throwing error to first base. In the fourth inning, Ellis gained her RBI on a long single to the short stop as Morales came in a second time in the game for a 3-0 lead. Maddox earned her first RBI with a single to left field as Ellis came in making it 4-0. Cummings put ETBU up, 5-0, in the sixth inning single through the left side of the field with Pyle touching home plate for the second time for a 6-0 lead. Stum then finished off the sixth inning singling down the third base line bringing in both Maddox and White for an seven-run advantage.
The seventh inning brought two home runs and five runs as ETBU went up 12-0. Maddox had a three-run shot to left field making it 10-0. Two batters later, Cummings smashed a shot to left field to finish off the scoring with two runs and a 12-run lead.
ETBU will play no. 9 Texas Lutheran on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. with an if-game following at 2:30 p.m.
