MARSHALL, Texas —After being down in two of the three sets, No. 2 East Texas Baptist University battled back for a 25-18, 25-22, 25-17 sweep of Hendrix College on Sunday afternoon in Ornelas Gymnasium.
Graycee Mosley and
Lara Hornsby lit up the offense, helping the team to a .280 hitting percentage alongside nine service aces.
Callie Humphrey led the defense to their 6th home shutout of the season. The Tigers are now 20-0 on the season, having swept every match played in Ornelas.
Mosley continued adding to her career double-doubles with 13 kills and 11 digs. Hornsby hit .455 with 13 kills, adding five digs.
Anita Hancock registered four blocks with three kills, and Humphrey recorded 18 digs.
Lexi Moody recorded 19 assists with three service aces, while
Sydney Temple had 16 assists and two service aces. ETBU's defense held Hendrix to a 0.054 hitting percentage in set three with only eight kills.
After overcoming an initial three-point deficit to Hendrix in the first set, ETBU was dominant.
McKinzie Riley and Mosley ignited the comeback with crucial kills, and
Katherine Server contributed with a service ace, leveling the score at 3-3. ETBU's defensive efforts, highlighted by Hancock's block, shifted momentum, allowing the team to push ahead to a 6-4 advantage.
Continuing the offensive drive, ETBU widened the gap to 10-6 with consistent setups from Moody and Temple, leading to effective strikes by Mosley and Hancock. Despite Hendrix's attempts to close in, ETBU maintained control, capitalizing on Hendrix's errors and further extending its lead. Hornsby and Riley added pivotal kills, helping secure a 19-15 margin. ETBU closed the first set with a 25-18 victory.
In the second set, the Tigers showcased resilience, overcoming an early deficit to secure a 25-22 win. Hendrix initially took a narrow lead, but ETBU responded with key plays, including a service ace by Moody and a kill by Hancock, keeping the score tight. Hornsby and Mosley contributed crucial kills as the set progressed, allowing ETBU to pull ahead.
ETBU capitalized on Hendrix's errors and maintained pressure with a late surge, which was highlighted by a service ace from Hornsby. Mosley closed the set with a decisive kill, sealing the set for ETBU, 25-22, after being down 20-13.
Despite initial attack errors in the third set, Mosley contributed a crucial kill to start the scoring for ETBU.
Lindsey Gooch and Hancock's block and a service ace helped ETBU gain momentum and narrow the score to 6-5 after being down, 6-1.
ETBU continued to assert pressure, with Hornsby and Server delivering consecutive kills to bring the score level at 9-9.
Lexi Moody's assists were pivotal during this stretch, as ETBU surged ahead to a 15-10 lead through a series of kills by Hornsby and Server.
The set concluded with a strong performance from Temple, setting up Hornsby for three consecutive kills. Mosley added another kill, and a final service ace clinched the set 25-17.
ETBU will return to Ornelas Gym on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. to face Centenary for the second time this season at 6:00 p.m.
