MARSHALL, Texas — Ornelas Gymnasium was rocking as No. 2 East Texas Baptist University swept American Southwest Conference rival University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in three sets, 25-20, 25-20, 25-21 victory in a Pink Out Homecoming match. ETBU is now 22-0 and 4-0 in the ASC.
ETBU's efficient attack, highlighted by 54 kills and a .301 hitting percentage, powered them to victory. They also recorded 53 digs, limiting the UMHB's team's offensive opportunities to just a .156 hitting percentage.
"I think just coming to this game, I had a lot of motivation, and I think that our defense played lights out. Whenever your defense plays lights out, that makes it really easy to be productive offensively,"
Graycee Mosley said.
Mosley led the Tigers with 18 kills, maintaining an impressive .486 hitting percentage while also contributing 14 digs pushing towards 80 career double-doubles.
Lexi Moody recorded 26 assists as
Anita Hancock added seven kills and registered two blocks.
Lara Hornsby racked up 11 kills and
Katherine Server collected three blocks.
ETBU began the first set with balanced scoring from Mosley, who contributed multiple kills, and Hancock, who reinforced the attack with crucial points. The home team capitalized on several errors from their opponents, including attack and service errors, to maintain a slight edge. Momentum shifted midway through as the Tigers assembled a series of successful plays, including a block by Server and
McKinzie Riley, to maintain their lead.
As the set progressed, ETBU continued to leverage Mosley's offensive efficiency, alongside key assists from Moody and contributions from
Sydney Temple. Defensive stops and timely kills by
Lindsey Gooch and Hornsby further extended their advantage. The set concluded with the Tigers securing a 25-20 win, establishing an early lead in the match.
ETBU began the second set with strong contributions from Mosley, who recorded multiple kills, and Moody, who provided key assists. The Tigers maintained a steady lead, capitalizing on errors from Mary Hardin-Baylor and extending their advantage with effective plays from Hornsby and Riley.
Despite a brief rally from their opponents that tied the score at 15-15, ETBU regained control with a decisive run, featuring a service ace from Hornsby and consistent attacks from Riley. The set concluded with Mosley's final kill, securing a 25-20 victory and maintaining their match momentum.
The Tigers began the third set with strong execution, establishing an early lead with consecutive kills by Server and Riley. Moody's precise assists contributed significantly to the home team's offense, resulting in a 4-0 start. Defensive plays, including a block by Hancock, further extended the lead to 8-1.
Mary Hardin-Baylor attempted to shift momentum, closing the gap with a service ace and several kills. However, ETBU responded with effective attacks, including multiple kills from Hornsby, pushing the score to 17-9. Late in the set, Mosley's service ace and Hancock's kill brought the Tigers to the brink of victory.
Despite a late surge from their opponents, which narrowed the gap to 24-21, ETBU capitalized on a final attack error from UMHB to secure the set 25-21, and match win.
ETBU will next be at home on Thursday as they host the University of St. Thomas Houston on Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
