MARSHALL, Texas – For the first time in program history, East Texas Baptist University has achieved the No. 1 ranking in both NPI and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Poll. ETBU moved up to the No. 1 AVCA ranking this week after the University of La Verne received their first loss of the season. ETBU is now the only undefeated program in NCAA Division III.
ETBU received 71.103 points in the NPI ranking, coming ahead of the Wisconsin-Oshkosh's 69.151 points and La Verne's 67.455 points. The Tigers have beaten two teams in the top 25 and seven in the top 50. The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire is No. 7 with 67.013 points, and Trinity University (TX) is No. 12 with 63.974 points. Edgewood is No. 29 with 60.089 points, and Berry is No. 30 with 59.977 points. Northwestern-St. Paul is No. 34 with 59.762 points, St. Thomas is No. 44 with 59.016 points, and Mary-Hardin Baylor is No. 49 with 58.595 points.
For the first time in program history, ETBU is No. 1 in the nation in the AVCA poll, with 2,142 points and 82 first-place votes out of 86. La Verne, who is now 24-1, is No. 2 with 1,99 points and three first-place votes while Illinois Wesleyan is No. 3 with 1,947 points. Wisconsin-Oshkosh is No. 5 with 1,785 points and one first-place vote, and Wisconsin-Eau Claire rounds out the top five with 1,785 points. ETBU had defeated Wisconsin-Eau Claire, No. 8 Trinity University, and No. 19 Berry College.
ETBU is 29-0 and went 6-0 in the American Southwest Conference and will play Howard Payne University on Friday night in the ASC Tournament Quarterfinals at 6:00 p.m.
