#TIGERSWIN | MTN | ETBU Takes TWU, 5-2, in Season Opener

MARSHALL, Texas – Opening the 2025 spring season in chilly conditions, East Texas Baptist University pulled away for a 5-2 win over Texas Wesleyan University (NAIA). ETBU is now 1-0, earning the program's first win over TWU in the NCAA Division III era.
 
New this year for NCAA Division III, the winner of the three doubles matches earns one point for the overall score. ETBU took the doubles point, winning the no. 2 and no. 3 matches. BT White and Jaco Synman teamed up for a 7-5 win at no. 2. Jacob Daniell and Erick Van Zyl then won the no. 3 match, 6-2. Max Karseno and Sam Black fell at no. 1 in a tie-breaker, 7-6.
 
ETBU then won the no. 2, no. 3, and no. 4 singles matches for the five points. Baptiste Berthier provided the second point of the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win at no. 6 in a less than an hour match. Synman followed at no. 2 over Malte Sommer, 6-2, 6-4, in 1:08 for a 3-0 lead. ETBU fell at no. 1, 7-6 (7-1), 6-1, ad Black battled Marco Salamanca. Slade Austin lost to Luca Link at no. 5, 6-3, 6-4, as TWU collected two points. Karseno won the no. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-4, against Adriano De Oliveira. Up, 4-2, White pulled off a tiebreaking win at no. 4, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-1) for the fifth point over Elliot Hoffman.

ETBU will face Austin College on Sunday at home at 3:00 p.m.
