MARSHALL, Texas – Hosting their first beach volleyball tournament of the spring season, East Texas Baptist University faced two NAIA programs on day one. ETBU fell to Oklahoma Wesleyan, 3-2, and then lost to Texas Wesleyan, 5-0, as four matches went three sets. ETBU is now 1-5 on the year.
 
In the first match, ETBU opened with a 1-1 tie after the no. 5 and no. 4 matches. ETBU won the no. 5 match, 21-18, 21-18, as Camille Freeman and Bailee Kitchen held off Angelina Arvizu and Katytlin Sowards. Emily Thomas  and Timberlin Ste. Marie fell at no. 4 in three sets, 15-21, 21-14, 11-15.
 
Coming down to the final four matches going three sets, ETBU won the no. 3 competition, 21-12, 21-9, as Sofia Castillo and Bella Fields won over Valeria Perez and Natalie Ater. Kyleigh Pate and Taylor Parker went three sets at no. 2 but fell 19-21, 21-19, 9-15. Brook Nalley and Sierra Wendt then lost the no. 1 match, 21-18, 21-17.
 
It was a close match against Texas Wesleyan as four of the five matches went three sets. Those four sets became the difference in the match. At no. 5, Kitchen and Freeman lost, 21-16, 21-23, 11-15, to start the match. Thomas and Ste. Marie then dropped a three-set match at no. 4, 18-21, 21-14, 7-15. The third three-set match came at no. 3 as Castillo and Field lost, 24-22, 19-21, 8-15. Pate and Parker came up short at no. 2, 24-26, 21-15, 11-15, at no. 2.
 
ETBU will face Ottawa University (KS) at 12:00 p.m. and Texas A&M Texarkana at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.
