COLUMBUS, Ga. – Bouncing back on day two of the NFCA Leadoff Classic, no. 1 East Texas Baptist University swept their games with wins over no. 6 Tufts University and Huntingdon College. ETBU is now 11-1 and 3-1 at the NFCA Leadoff Classic.
Tristen Maddox had four hits, five RBI and one home run to lead the team.
Tauryn Cummings added five hits with four RBIs, a triple, and a double.
Madalyn Melton and
Avery Holland earned the wins.
No. 1 ETBU 12, No. 6 Tufts 4
ETBU run-ruled Tufts with 12 hits for 12 runs, moving to 10-1. Maddox was 3-of-3 with two RBI, while Cummings went 3-of4 with two RBI.
Emma Bell also added two hits as
Mallory Pyle had two RBI. Melton went five innings for the win with two strikeouts, seven hits, and no earned runs.
Tufts scored three in the top of the first inning, but a Cummings double in the bottom of the inning brought in the first run. An error allowed ETBU's second run to come in, and then
Makayla Menchue scored on a wild pitch to tie the game in the second inning. ETBU scored six runs in the third inning for a 9-3 lead. Maddox had a two-RBI single to highlight the inning.
Pyle doubled in two runs in the fourth for the 11-3 lead, and then Cummings ended the game in the fifth with a single to right field as
Izabella Morales came in for the run-rule win.
No. 1 ETBU 8, Huntingdon 3
ETBU handed Huntingdon their first loss of the year, coming from behind for the second game in a row.
Haylie Stum and Cummings were both 2-of-4 in the game. Maddox, Morales, and
Emma Bell all had two RBI as Cummings and
Ava Rodriguez added one RBI. Holland came in relief in the first inning, going the rest of the game for the win with six strikeouts.
Bell tripled in two runs in the first for a 2-0 lead. ETBU then gave up three runs at the bottom of the first, falling behind by one, 3-2. Cummings tied the game in the third with a triple to right field, and Maddox had a two-run home run in the fourth to break the tie, 5-3. Rodriguez produced a pinch-hit single for a RBI in the sixth, and Morales produced a two-run home run in the same inning, making it 8-3.
ETBU will end the tournament on Sunday, facing no. 10 Trine University and DePauw.
