VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Playing in their second big tournament in three weeks, no. 1 East Texas Baptist University split their games on their first day in the Virginia Beach Games. ETBU opened the day shutting out George Fox, 10-0, in five innings but fell to no. 6 host Virginia Wesleyan, 6-1, and is now 16-2.
No. 1 ETBU 10, GFU 0 (5 inn)
Larkin Daniels continued her pitching dominance throwing a five-inning no-hitter over George Fox. She recorded seven strikeouts and walked one batter. The first six batters were retired before she gave up a walk in the bott of the third inning. After that walk, the next batters were retired with five strikeouts.
Izabella Morales led ETBU with five RBI going 2-of-4 with a triple.
Emma Bell,
Mallory Pyle, and
Mary Frances Ellis all had two hits.
Tristen Maddox had a home run for two RBI. Pyle also added two RBI as Ellis had one RBI.
ETBU's first run came in on an error in the second inning and then Morales followed with a bases clearing triple for the 4-0 lead. In the sixth inning, Pyle doubled in Bell and
Makayla Menchue making it 6-0. Morales added two more RBI in the third on a single up the middle bringing in Pyle and Ellis for an 8-0 lead. Maddox finished off the scoring in the fifth inning with a two-run home run for the run-rule win, 10-0.
No. 6 VWU 6, No. 1 ETBU 1
After two scoreless innings, VWU came away with four runs in he bottom of the third, as three were unearned, for a 4-0 lead. They added two more on a home run in the sixth for a 6-0 lead before ETBU scored their lone run in the seventh.
Ellis went 2-of-3 at the plate to lead ETBU. Maddox earned the only RBI in the seventh inning. ETBU had only six hits as Bell had the only extra base hit with a double.
Madalyn Melton took the loss and is 5-1 going three innings.
McKenzie Jones finished the last three innings and recorded three strikeouts.
ETBU will take on no. 16 Pfeiffer and no. 7 Christopher Newport on Friday.
