CLAREMONT, Calif. – Finishing the 2025 season in the NCAA Division III Tournament second round, East Texas Baptist University played valiantly against no. 3 Pomona-Pitzer College coming up shy, 4-0. ETBU ends their season at 9-7 in the program's second appearance in the NCAA Tournament after winning their second American Southwest Conference Tournament Championship.
ETBU had an uphill battle in doubles as Pomona-Pitzer posted the top two teams in the region and sixth best in the nation. At no. 1 doubles,
Monique Ybarra and
Bailey Smith fell to no. 6/no. 1(region) Angie Zhou/Marissa Markey, 6-3.
Jayde Childress and
Fernanda Ruiz Burkart then fell to the no. 2 team in the region, Nyakiriri Kanefu and Ameila Poor, 6-1.
Kristyn Dunn and
Isabella Macquet were up, 4-3, at no. 3 over Meh Chaudhary and Annique Varty when PPC won the doubles point.
Smith had a 6-1, 6-1 loss at no. 2 singles to no. 24/no. 7 (region) Markey for PPC's second point. Dunn fell to Chaudhary, 6-3, 6-0, at no. 5 singles and Varty clinched the win for PPC at no. 6, 6-0, 6-2, over Macquet.
In the unfinished matches, Childress was battling at no. 3 against Poor, 6-3, 5-3, when it ended. Ruiz Burkart was down 6-3, 2-1, at no. 4 and Ybarra had a tough match vs. no. 4/no. 1 (region) Zhou, 6-0, 5-0.
ETBU's magical post season will be one to remember taking wins over Hardin-Simmons and then host Mary Hardin-Baylor in the ASC Tournament while winning a NCAA Tournament first round match over Edgewood.
