MARSHALL, Texas – A dominant pitching performance by no. 1 East Texas Baptist University propelled the Tigers to the program's 13th American Southwest Conference Tournament Championship.
Avery Holland held LeTourneau University to one hit, shutting out the Yellow Jackets, 2-0, as ETBU won their third straight ASC Tournament Championship. ETBU is now 40-3, as it is the fifth time in program history to win 40+ games in a season and the first time to have back-to-back 40+ win seasons.
Hannah Benavides was named the ASC Tournament MVP for going 2-0 with 15 strikeouts and one hit. Joining her on the All-ASC Tournament team was
Mallory Pyle,
Mary Frances Ellis,
Izabella Morales, and
Katelynn Jones.
Morales led the ETBU, contributing two RBIs and a double. Bell and Ellis added two hits. ETBU had nine hits with two doubles.
Holland pitched a complete game shutout, allowing only one hit and one walk over seven innings. She faced 24 batters and struck out seven, retiring the side third, fourth, fifth, and seventh innings, with a no-hitter through five innings.
ETBU had a productive second inning as
Ava Rodriguez singled and advanced to third, eventually scoring on a bases-loaded walk by Morales. That was the first run of the day. Then, in the fourth inning, the Tigers extended their lead. Pyle's single and Ellis's bunt single set the stage for Morales, who delivered an RBI double, pushing the score to 2-0.
The ETBU defense held firm, allowing only one hit through seven innings. Holland had three straight ground outs to retire the side and end the game in the seventh for the ASC Championship.
It is the eighth ASC Tournament Championship under head coach
Janae Shirley, as she has now won 39 ASC Tournament games. ETBU is the only program to win three straight ASC Championships in a row, holding the record for five consecutive years from 2000 to 2004. They have never missed an appearance in the ASC Tournament, making 25 consecutive with a 65-27 record.
ETBU will wait to see if they will host an NCAA Regional Tournament next week.
