PREVIEW | VB | Gamenotes vs. Centenary, UMHB

MARSHALL, Texas– After wrapping up a historic weekend, the No. 5 East Texas Baptist University will hit the road to Centenary College on Tuesday and then head to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor to open American Southwest Conference play on Friday. This past weekend, ETBU defeated then No. 12 Trinity University (TX) for the first time in program history and is off to the best start in program history, going 11-0. ETBU went 3-0, winning the Trinity University Tiger Invite. They also achieved the highest ranking in ETBU Volleyball history at the no. 5 spot on the AVCA Poll. Graycee Mosley, Callie Humphrey, and Anita Hancock were all named to the All-Tournament team, with Mosley winning All-Tournament MVP. Match times this week are Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. for Centenary and Saturday at 6:00 p.m. for UMHB. 
 
Here are the game notes for this weekend's matchup;
 
The Basics
The No. 5-ranked East Texas Baptist University Tigers (11-0 overall; 0-0 ASC) will head to Shreveport, La., this Tuesday to face Centenary College (1-4 overall; 0-0 SCAC). The match will occur at the Gold Dome on Centenary's campus. The match will begin at 6:00 p.m. and is another non-conference match. 
 
The Tigers' next match is against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (10-1 overall; 0-0 ASC) to open up ASC play. It will occur at the Mayborn Campus Center on UMHB's Campus in Belton, TX.  
 
Success in Shreveport 
ETBU is 15-1 against Centenary and 4-0 against them in Shreveport, La. The Tigers' only loss to the SCAC opponent was in October 2015. ETBU has swept Centenary nine times in the 15 matches. 
 
Against the Crusaders 
ETBU is 26-17 against UMHB and has won the last four matches. The Tigers are responsible for three of the Crusaders' eight losses a season ago, including a five-set match for the ASC championship title. The conference foes both participated in the ETBU Tiger invite earlier this month, but did not face off. 
 
Historic Weekend  
ETBU went 3-0 this weekend, defeating Whitworth (3-1), Univ. of Northwestern – St. Paul (3-0), and Trinity (3-1). The Tigers broke three program records this weekend with beating No. 12 Trinity Texas for the first time in program history, going 11-0 and earning the highest ranking in program history at no. 5 in the AVCA Poll. 
 
Face of the ASC  
ETBU swept the ASC Player of the Week awards this past weekend, with Anita Hancock winning Offensive Player of the Week and Callie Humphrey winning Defensive Player of the Week.
 
Hancock recorded 33 kills with a .456 Attack percentage and 16 blocks in three matches. She leveled up against No. 12 Trinity Texas, achieving a .684 hitting percentage due to her 14 kills and one error. She also recorded eight blocks that match eclipsing a double-double. This is Hancock's second player of the week award this season. She earned Defensive Player of the Week on September 1st for her play in the Pikes Peak Challenge. 
 
Humphrey recorded 63 digs, seven assists, and five service aces in three matches. Humphrey also had her best match of this weekend against No.12 Trinity Texas with 31 Digs and two assists. This is Humphrey's second time winning Defensive Player of the Week. The last time she earned this award was September 23, 2024. 
 
Tigers with Tenure 
All of the Tigers' statistical leaders are upperclassmen. Senior Graycee Mosley leads the team with 161 kills. Senior Lexi Moody leads the team in assists with 183 followed closely by junior Sydney Temple with 172. Mosley also leads in service aces with 18 followed by senior Callie Humphrey with 14. Junior Anita Hancock leads the team in blocks with 48 and Humphrey in digs with 152. ETBU's senior class includes five players: McKenzie Mansell, Callie Humphrey, Taylor Poore, Graycee Mosley, and Lexi Moody. Four of the five have been four-year starters for the Tigers.
 
Mosley File 
Three-time ASC Most Valuable Player Graycee Mosley heads into week three with 59 career double-doubles. The 13-time ASC Player of the Week is third on ETBU's all-time kills list and ninth in all-time digs.  
 
 'Hey Now, You're an All Star' 
Head Coach Mallory Matthews, the reigning ASC Coach of the Year, enters 2025 with five returning All-ASC players — Graycee Mosley, Anita Hancock, Lexi Moody, Callie Humphrey, and McKenzie Mansell. Mosley is the three-time ASC MVP, Moody was the 2024 ASC Setter of the Year, and Humphrey the ASC Newcomer of the Year. 
 
Put a Ring on it 
In early September, the Tigers received their 2024 ASC Championship ring at Ornelas Stadium in their home opener. 
 
Hometown Heroes (Sept. 5-6) 
The Tigers went 4-0 in their home opener, winning every match in three sets. Last year, they posted a 29-match streak that ended in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. They carry a 30-match regular-season home winning streak and a 29-match regular-season win streak into Week three of play. The Tigers have not lost a regular-season home match since 2022, when they fell 3-2 to LeTourneau.
 
Cool in Colorado (Aug. 29-30)
ETBU opened the season by going a cool 4-0 in the Pikes Peak Challenge hosted by Colorado College. The Tigers started off the weekend by beating Edgewood 3-0 and then played a close 5-set match with no. 22 Wisconsin-Eau Claire. ETBU then took on host Colorado College in a 3-1 victory, ending their time with a 3-0 sweep against Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
