GEORGETOWN, Texas – Despite a strong second-half offensive effort, East Texas Baptist University couldn't convert its chances, falling 2-0 to Southwestern University in non-conference action on Thursday night. ETBU is now 5-5-0 and will open American Southwest Conference play on October 1.
The Tigers were held scoreless, despite registering 15 total shots, with nine coming in the second half as four were on goal. ETBU placed seven shots on goal but couldn't get past the Pirates' goalkeeper.
Josh Daley led the offensive push with three shots on goal, while
Brenden Gajewski added two.
Kaden Elsasser and
Matthew Aguilar also recorded shots on target but were turned away.
Taking three shots in the first 10 minutes, ETBU had looks in the sixth, eighth, and 10
th minutes with a shot on goal in the sixth minute. ETBU played toe-to-toe with Southwestern matching their shots in the first half but the Pirates found the net in the 38
th minute for the 1-0 lead. Elsasser had a look just before halftime but Southwestern stopped his shot.
The second half brought nine shots with four on goal. Southwestern scored early in the 49
th minute for a 2-0 lead. ETBU followed with shots in the 49
th, 55
th, and 62
nd minutes as
Joshua Daley had a chance in the 55
th minute but his shot was grabbed in the bottom center goal for the save. Two final chances on goal came in the 88
th minute in a 30-second time span as Gajewski and Daley both had looks but Southwestern's goalie denied the attempts to keep the shutout.
ETBU continues its road stretch on Wednesday, Oct. 1, when it visits American Southwest Conference rival Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas.
