AWARD | MTN | ETBU Has Five Named All-ASC; Armbruster is Newcomer of Year

MARSHALL, Texas – It has been a great post-season for East Texas Baptist University as they earned several American Southwest Conference awards. They earned one major award, have four student-athletes on the All-ASC First Team, and six players overall earning awards. Erick Van Zyl, Mark Armbruster, Jaco Synman, Baptiste Berthier, Sam Black, and Max Karseno all earned awards. 
 
Van Zyl was named the ASC Tournament MVP and was All-ASC First Team singles at Flight 4 and All-ASC Second Team doubles at Flight 2. He went 13-5 in singles play with a 2-1 ASC record and was 2-1 in doubles play with Mark Armbruster. He also made the ASC All-Tournament team and the ASC Player of the Week on Feb. 18.
 
Black is a member of the ASC Sportsmanship Team of the Year and is All-ASC Second Team doubles Flight 1. He was voted onto the Sportsmanship Team by the ASC coaches and sports information directors, alongside three other conference members. At doubles, he was 2-1 with Max Karseno. He was voted the ASC Player of the Week on Apr. 6.
 
Berthier is an All-ASC First Team singles member at Flight 5 and made the ASC All-Tournament team. He was 7-3 on the year and went 3-0 in the ASC. He helped ETBU win the ASC semifinal match over HSU with a 6-4, 6-4 victory.
 
Karseno gains two ASC awards, being All-ASC First Team singles at Flight 6 and Second Team doubles at Flight 1 with Black. He went 3-0 in the ASC and was 9-7 on the year combined at Flights 4 through 6. In doubles, they were 14-4 with a 2-1 ASC record.
 
Snyman earned a spot on the All-ASC First Team in singles at Flight 2. He went 11-8 on the year and 2-1 in the ASC. He was also the ASC Player of the Week on Feb. 25.
 
Armbruster is the ASC Newcomer of the Year, made the ASC All-Tournament team, and is on the All-ASC Second Team in doubles at Flight 2 with Van Zyl. He was 2-0 in singles Flight 3 at the ASC Tournament, helping ETBU win their second consecutive championship. In doubles with Van Zyl in the ASC, he went 2-1 and was 1-1 at the ASC Tournament. He was also the ASC Player of the Week on Mar. 17.
 
ETBU will face No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday in California in the NCAA Tournament.
