KERRVILLE, Texas — Offensive pressure turned into three goals as the East Texas Baptist University (4-3-0, 1-0-0) defeated Schreiner University (0-4-1, 0-1-0) 3-1 on Thursday at Mountaineer Field in their first American Southwest Conference match of the year. After being held scoreless in the first half, ETBU scored three times in the second and kept the Mountaineer off the board after halftime. The Tigers finished with a 12-6 shot advantage and an 8-3 edge in shots on goal. Late in the second half, ETBU withstood four Schreiner attacking actions from 76:04 to 84:10 without conceding.
Giselle Laredo scored and led ETBU with three shots, putting all three on goal.
Caroline Smith added a goal on two shots and was credited with the security goal.
Paige Barclay tallied a goal and put both of her shots on frame.
Hannah Warren recorded an assist and placed her lone shot on goal. Sierra Mallory started the match and had one save and one goal against in 66 minutes while
Taylor Lauster went the final 24 minutes with one save.
ETBU gave up the first-half breakthrough in the 26th minute, when Jess Sinclair scored for Schreiner off an assist from Aspen Ulibarri to make it 1-0. Earlier,
Mallory Sierra kept the match scoreless with a save on a Mountaineer shot in the 12th minute, and the Tigers generated looks from
Grace Shurley and
Ava Trevino before the goal. ETBU continued to press after falling behind, with
Lenah Montes sending a shot high in the 35th minute and
Paige Barclay putting a shot on frame in the 38th that Emilie Novasad saved. Schreiner earned a late corner kick, and the Tigers went into halftime down 1-0.
ETBU took control of the second half with three goals, erasing a 1-0 deficit and closing out a 3-1 victory. Barclay tied the match at 46:55 off Warren's assist, and after Laredo had a shot saved at 49:32, Smith scored at 50:01 to put the Tigers ahead 2-1. ETBU kept pressing with saved shots from
Audrey Hall and Warren before Smith missed high, then added to the margin when Laredo scored at 77:47. Schreiner earned three corners after the 76th minute and put a shot on frame in the 85th, but
Taylor Lauster made the save as ETBU finished the half without conceding.
ETBU travels to Brownwood, Texas, to face Howard Payne on Saturday, Sept. 26, at 5 p.m. at Citizens National Bank Field.
First Half
- After each side earned an early corner, Sierra made the first save of the half on Kailey Ellsworth's shot at 11:19.
- ETBU generated attempts from Grace Shurley at 17:49 and Ava Trevino at 21:54 before Schreiner went in front 1-0 at 25:32 on Jess Sinclair's goal from Aspen Ulibarri.
- Lenah Montes and Paige Barclay added shots after the Schreiner goal, with Barclay's effort saved by Emilie Novasad at 37:52, and Schreiner carried the 1-0 lead into halftime.
Second Half
- Paige Barclay tied the match 1-1 at 46:55 off Warren's assist, and after Giselle Laredo forced a save, Caroline Smith scored at 50:01 to move ETBU in front 2-1.
- Schreiner earned a corner and sent a shot high early in the half, but the Tigers followed with three shots from 54:08 to 61:37, including saves on attempts by Audrey Hall and Warren.
- Laredo added to the lead at 77:47 to make it 3-1 and put another shot on goal at 79:09.
- Schreiner created late pressure with corners at 81:23 and 84:10, but Lauster saved Olivia Ruiz's shot at 84:10 as ETBU closed out the 3-1 win.
