No stranger to bass fishing collegiate competition, Cameron Burger is the first head coach for the East Texas Baptist University bass fishing team. He is entering his sixth year with the new program and has already broken through to unexpected heights. Burger was a part of Dallas Baptist University’s bass fishing team as an angler and also a coach before coming to ETBU.

Cameron served as the coach for DBU's Bass Team from 2013-2014.  He is no stranger to East Texas as he played football at Kilgore as an offensive lineman.  He also served as one of the head wranglers at Sky Ranch in Van for a couple of years and even fell in love with an East Texas girl during his work at Sky Ranch.  Now married to Shelby May of Canton, he and Shelby return to East Texas to pour their life into ETBU and Marshall.  Shelby will be teaching 5th grade science at the STEM in MISD.

Burger quotes, “When I joined the DBU bass team I was fortunate enough to be able to see the program grow at a rapid pace. Each tournament we competed in was bigger than the last. And when we started attending these tournaments we began to get national recognition which ranked us among the other colleges in the country. Starting a bass fishing team at ETBU will give opportunity to college students to compete in a sport that is increasingly becoming more popular each year along with being able to fellowship with other anglers across the country. ETBU's recent partnership with Skeeter Boats and Yamaha Motors will surely draw the interest of high school seniors and college students to attend ETBU. I have seen first-hand the impact club sports have on a campus and their students. I look forward to what God has planned for the ETBU bass team.”

Coaching tiger bass fishing will be a secondary responsibility for Cameron. Cameron will primarily be focused on his responsibilities as Director of Construction Management with the launching of our new department for the building of townhomes and the remodeling of existing residential facilities. Under the leadership of Chris Crawford as director of University operations, Cameron will guide our student efforts with the Neighborhood Renewal Initiative (NRI). The Neighborhood Renewal Initiative program will provide our students the opportunity to transform one house, one street, one neighborhood at a time as we address the need for more quality and affordable housing for the citizens of Marshall and those families God will call to build their lives in our city.

Cameron worked two years with Concentra of Plano as an operations program manager for urgent care and physical therapy clinics before coming to ETBU. Cameron has a strong background in facilities management and skilled carpentry.  He served as the facilities and maintenance manager at First Baptist Church Carrollton for four years prior to his time with Concentra. Cameron is become well-known for his craftsmanship in building high-end rustic home furniture.  With his extensive experience in remodeling, wiring and finishing residential properties along with his knowledge in operating heavy construction machinery, we are blessed with a talented man to launch our construction management program for building the future physical development of our campus plant.

Burger finishes with, “My vision for the program before fishing is to instill in the anglers that their attitude and sportsmanship directly reflects upon the school, the bass team and themselves and no matter the outcome of any tournament we want to set a Christ like example for people we come in contact with and the other colleges we compete against. I want the ETBU bass team to be top tier among all the other schools in the nation. I want other college level anglers to see ETBU's success and opportunity and make them want to become a Tiger. I know what it takes to be successful in collegiate bass fishing and it starts with the angler. We can have all of the right equipment the best boats and the best gear but if the angler isn’t right then it is very hard to be successful. My plan for the anglers is to mentor them and help them become stronger Men of God as well as stronger collegiate anglers. Mentoring the anglers will be my number one objective, whether that be in things they are struggling with, classes and or issues they are facing even if they need someone to talk to. I feel that once the trust is there between me and the anglers we will become a more successful team as a whole. My desire for this team is for each member to draw closer to Christ, by using the platform of bass fishing to set a Christ like example for the other college anglers.”
