Mallory Matthews came back home to ETBU as the new head coach on December 17, 2021, and immediately made an impact. The former AVCA All-American took ETBU to the next level in the ASC and NCAA Division III.Â
2024 Season
New records were set in 2024 as ETBU posted a program best 28-match win streak, has a 19-match home winning streak, and upset no. 9 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps finishing 29-2 and 8-0 in the ASC. Matthews guided ETBU to back-to-back ASC Tournament Championships and to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament for the second year in a row being named the ASC Coach and Region 10 Coach of the Year. ETBU earned national rankings for 12 weeks in a row reaching as high as no. 8 and finished with a NPI ranking of no. 12. Matthews also won her 100th career match as a head coach vs. Hendrix College on September 7.Â
ETBU won their second straight ASC Championship in a five-set win over Mary Hardin-Baylor, 16-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-27, 19-17, as Avery Reid was named the ASC Tournament MVP. ETBU traveled to Virginia for the NCAA Tournament defeating Allegheny College, 3-0, but fell to Christopher Newport, 3-1, in the second round.
Graycee Mosley and Avery Reid were named AVCA All-Americans and were AVCA All-Region First Team. Mosely was the ASC MVP for the third year in a row as Callie Humphrey (Newcomer of the Year) and Lexi Moody (Setter of the Year) also earned ASC awards. Eight players were named All-ASC as the team earned the AVCA Team Academic Award and Mosley was a CSC Academic All-American First Team member.Â
Â
2023 Season
Matthews had one of the most successful seasons at ETBU in her second year as head coach guiding the Tigers to their first ASC Tournament Championship in 20 years and winning a match in the NCAA Tournament. ETBU tied for the ASC regular season championship at 13-1 and then went 3-0 in the ASC Championship Tournament claiming the championship over Mary Hardin-Baylor, 3-0 (29-27, 25-14, 25-10). Her team then upset #13 North Park, 3-1 (19-25, 25-21, 28-26, 25-15) in the first round of the NCAA Division III Osh Kosh (WI) Regional Tournament. They then took #20 La Verne to five sets, 15-25, 25-23, 25-14, 23-25, 11-15.Â
This year was also the first time since 2008 and 2009 to have back-to-back 20-win seasons as ETBU won the second most matches in program history with 26. They posted a program record 13-match winning streak and were regionally ranked in all four rankings. ETBU also had an 11-match winning streak in the season which is second best in program history.Â
ETBU earned several post season awards as Graycee Mosley was named to the AVCA All-American honorable mention team for the second year in a row while also winning her second straight ASC Most Vaulable Player award. Mosley was also the ASC Tournament MVP and made the NCAA Osh Kosh Regional All-Tournament team. Eight players earned All-ASC awards as Mosley, Avery Reid, and Lillie Hill made the first team.Â
Â
2022 Season
In her first season, Matthews guided to 20 wins and played for the ASC Tournament Championship as it was the first time since 2015 that ETBU had won 20 matches. Her team defeated #25 Mary Hardin-Baylor, 3-2, on September 8 for the program's first win over the Crusaders in eight years and first win over a ranked opponent since 2013. She started off the year, 10-0, which is the best start in program history.
In the ASC Tournament, ETBU defeated McMurry, 3-0, and then upset Mary Hardin-Baylor, 3-2 (13-25, 25-15, 25-20, 22-25, 15-10) to advance to the championship match. ETBU battled in the ASC Championship match vs. Texas Dallas but fell, 3-0 (17-25, 22-25, 19-25). Â
Four players earned ASC awards as Graycee Mosley and Avery Reid were named to the first team. Mosley was named the ASC Freshman of the Year and MVP and earned AVCA All-Region first team and All-American honorable mention.Â
Â
ASC Success at LeTourneau
The two-time American Southwest Conference East Division Coach of the Year, Matthews made an immediate impact at LeTourneau University. In three seasons her teams won 51 matches, went 30-18 in the ASC, and finished in the ASC Tournament semi-finals, twice. Prior to Matthews, LETU had not had a winning season in the NCAA Division III era which started in 1998. Her 18-14 record in 2019 was also the first winning season for LETU since 1989 (17-14).
Â
She produced 13 players that received ASC awards as Kianna Crow was an All-ASC selection three times and a two-time ASC East Player of the Year. Other player awards included Natalie Davenport (2019) and Allison Smith (2021 spring) as the ASC East Freshmen of the Year, Courtney Edge winning the ASC East Newcomer of the Year (2021 spring), and Natalie Connelly as the ASC East Sportsmanship award winner (2021 spring).
Â
ETBU Family
No stranger to ETBU, Matthews returns home to the program where she was an AVCA All-American and voted a CoSIDA Academic All-American playing from 2013-16. She is fifth all-time in career kills (1,373) and sixth in digs (1,147). In her four years as a player, ETBU won 83 matches finishing as the ASC Tournament runners-up in 2013 and qualified for four ASC Tournaments. In the 2013 season, ETBU won a program best 32 matches under former head coach Lyndsay Mashe. The 2014 season featured a program best 14-match winning streak improving their home record to 18-0 over the previous three seasons. She became an All-American in 2015 and then was a CoSIDA Academic All-American third-team member in 2016.
Â
Keeping the ETBU family ties, Matthews started her coaching career in 2017 at the University of Texas Tyler under Mashe as a graduate assistant. UTT went 46-10 in those two years qualifying for the ASC Tournament in 2017. The 2018 season was a transitional year to NCAA Division II where UTT finished ranked 19
th and went 24-2.
Â
Matthews is married to ETBU baseball associate head coachÂ
Tanner Matthews and they have two children, Swade and Crew. They attend New Beginnings Church in Longview, Texas.
