Second Half Comeback Secures ETBU's First Win

Box Score

MARSHALL, Texas – Two halves make the difference in football as East Texas Baptist University's second half was their best putting up 17 points for a come from behind win over Austin College, 17-7, for their first win of the year.  With only 133 yards of total offense at the half, East Texas Baptist opened up their offense in the second half for over 270 yards and two touchdowns pushing their way through for the win.

It was a career day on offense for Seth Hubbard, Toi Glover, and Kwame' Spikes as they turned it on in the second half.  Hubbard threw for 268 yards by going 23-of-31 in the pocket and then Glover rushed for 103 yards on 20 rushes.  Spikes had a career-high 10 receptions as he finished with 113 yards receiving.  The offense finished the day with 409 yards as 268 came on passing and 141 rushing.

Both teams struggled offensively in the first half as there were 12 combined possessions with a total of 150 yards of offense.  Austin College broke the scoreless tie with 57 seconds left in the half when Austin Rainer threw an 18 yard reception, which was just one of four receptions on the day, to Alan Klink to take the 7-0 lead.

East Texas Baptist would start the second half with the ball but could not find the endzone.  When it looked as though the Tigers would tie the game from one-yard out on a fourth-and-goal, the Austin College defense stuffed Glover as they turned the ball over on downs.

It was the East Texas Baptist defense's turn to shine as they stopped the Kangaroos in three plays to hand the ball back to their offense at their own 38-yard line.  Hubbard took control of the offense and drove his team 62-yards in just under four minutes to tie the game at seven.  He connected with Spikes on a five-yard pass to put East Texas Baptist right back into the game.

Another three-and-out was forced by the East Texas Baptist defense as Hubbard once again worked the offensive magic.  He took his team 71-yards with the drive ending on a Glover 27-yard run to take the lead, 14-7.

It was a stiff challenge for Austin College against the East Texas Baptist defense as they went three-and-out in their next two possessions and with eight minutes left in the game Brian Nolan hit his first career field goal from 22-yards out to give the Tigers a two possession lead.

The charge by the defense was led by Jordan Hayes' 11 tackles but the entire squad produced one fumble recovery and two interceptions.  After East Texas Baptist scored to make it 17-7, Austin College drove to the Tiger 19-yard line threatening to score but Tafadswa Charuma forced a fumble that Jordan Hayes recovered.  Collin Bieschke and Dylan Benge recorded interceptions as the team now has four on the year.

East Texas Baptist will travel to Salem, Oregon, next week and play a Friday night game at 9:00 p.m. central time vs. Willamette.
