Box Score SEGUIN, Texas – Down seven points, 71-64, with 8:12 to play in the game, East Texas Baptist University finished on a 20-2 run to move to 3-0 against Schreiner University (1-4), 84-73. ETBU's defense allowed one Schreiner bucket in that time.
Jamil Samuel poured in a career-high 26 points with nine rebounds to lead ETBU. Dylan Augustine made four three pointers and finished with 15 points while Junior Mitchell had 14 points. Schreiner had four players score in double figures as Josh Bashford had 18 points.
ETBU trailed the entire first half and at one point was down 13 points, 23-10, at the 11:33 mark. ETBU did answer with a run to pull within one, 23-22, with 7:17 to go on a 12-0 run. Samuel had six of the 12 points as Mitchell added four. At the 7:17 mark, Mitchell made a lay up to put ETBU within one point. Isaiah Thomas then tied the game at 25 on a three-point play with 6:33 left and then was also tied at 27 at the 6:12 mark. In the final six minutes, both teams exchanged the lead as Samuel put ETBU up 41-38 on a three-pointer with 1:02 left to play. Schreiner then scored the final five-points of the half to take a 43-41 lead at the half.
The first 12 minutes of the second half was a mirror of the first half as each team would have the lead. ETBU had a five-point lead, 58-53, on a Tyler Day three-pointer at the 15:05 mark. By the 8:12 mark, Schreiner had a seven-point lead, 71-64. It was at this point in the game, ETBU's defense took over going on the 20-2 run to end the game. ETBU's defense did not allow Schreiner to make a shot for over six minutes. When Schreiner made it shot, ETBU had 74-73 lead with 2:32 left to play. ETBU then made 10-of-12 free throws in the last two minutes to seal the win.
Both teams shot well the entire game as ETBU made 48 percent of their shots to Schreiner's 42 percent. From three-point range, ETBU shot 40 percent (13-of-32) while Schreiner made 38 percent. From the foul line ETBU made 21-of-30 for 70 percent while Schreiner was 17-of-22 (77 percent). ETBU also out rebounded Schreiner, 37-31, and forced 16 turnovers.
ETBU will play host Texas Lutheran on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. in the last game of the Texas Lutheran University Thanksgiving Classic.
