MARSHALL, Texas – It was a great weekend to be an East Texas Baptist University Tiger as the women's tennis team took five championships at the American Southwest Conference Fall Individual Tournament. ETBU won two doubles and three single championships which is a first for the program.
"I don't know how to describe this past weekend," says head coach Jeff Bramlett. "It was so amazing to see the team come together in their first outing of the year and I am so excited for the future of this team."
Kayla Casey became a two-time champion winning both the #1 doubles and #1 singles flights. In doubles she partnered with Kate Bramlett for three wins defeating the best from Concordia-Texas (8-1), McMurry (8-1), and Texas Lutheran (8-2). Casey then went on to take the #1 singles championship with 6-2, 6-3 win over last year's ITA regional champion Sofia Vega from Texas Lutheran. She also had wins against Rachel Morrisseau (LETU), 6-0, 6-0, and Chloe Patterson (McM), 6-2, 6-2.
Mullika Seekieo and Kellie Cawthon took the #4 doubles championship with an 8-4 win over Hardin-Simmons. They had a first-round bye and then defeated McMurry, 8-5, before the championship match.
Tiffany Stankiewicz was the third championship as she took the #3 singles flight. She started with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Hart from Texas-Tyler followed by another 6-4, 6-0 win against Wheeler from Schriener. The championship match was a 6-2, 6-2 win against Smith from Hardin-Simmons. She then teamed Elizabeth Morton to finish as runners-up in the #2 doubles flight falling in the championship to Hardin-Simmons, 8-6.
The final championship came in #7 singles with Cawthon. She started out with a 6-3 win over Smith (Schreiner) and then posted a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Weinheimer of Hardin-Simmons. The final win came in the championship match came against Baxley of Texas Lutheran, 6-1, 6-0.
Sierra Pizarro finished as a runner-up in the #5 singles falling to Zullo of Hardin-Simmons, 6-3, 4-6, 16-14. She picked up wins over Pergande and Dyer (TLU). Alex Rubio also finished as a runner-up at #8 singles falling 6-3, 6-5, to Hardin-Simmons.
ETBU heads to Southwestern University this weekend for the ITA Regional Championships.
