Box Score MARSHALL, Texas – Hanging on to edge out the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, the East Texas Baptist University men's basketball won its 10th game of the year, 73-70, on Thursday night inside of Ornelas Gym. The victory improves ETBU to 4-2 in the American Southwest Conference, while Mary Hardin-Baylor goes to 4-9 and 1-3 in ASC competition.
Four players scored in double figures for ETBU as Tyler Day led the team with 16 points. He converted five-of-eight shots from the floor, including four 3-pointers. Jordan Quillian and Bret Atkins both contributed 12 points while Dylan Augustine had 11 points. Augustine also led the team with seven rebounds.
For the night, ETBU shot 45.5 percent from the field (25-of-55) but converted 54.2 percent of its 3-point shot attempts (13-of-24). Additionally, ETBU finished 10-of-10 from the free throw line and held a 35-29 edge in rebounding.
Ahead by an 18-13 margin after a pair of Mary Hardin-Baylor free throws with 8:25 until the half, ETBU closed with 25 points in an eight-plus-minute span to assume a 43-27 advantage at halftime. During this particular span, ETBU converted seven shots, including five 3-pointers, as well as all six free throw attempts.
In the second half, ETBU went up by 22 points after a Quillian basket made the score 55-33 with 15:14 left in regulation. But Mary Hardin-Baylor would whittle away at its deficit, narrowing the lead over a 10-minute period. A 10-0 run by UMHB shrunk ETBU's lead to just two points at 69-67 with 1:16 on the clock. Holding a 71-70 edge with less than 20 seconds remaining, ETBU claimed a crucial steal by Junior Mitchell, which led to a pair of Day free throws as ETBU escaped as 73-70 winners.
For Mary Hardin-Baylor, Daniel Mills led all players with 17 points and also had four rebounds. Russell Green totaled 13 points and four rebounds.
