ETBU Home Winning Streak Ends at 26-Games

MARSHALL, Texas – Four players scored at least 12 points, but the No. 15-ranked East Texas Baptist University men's basketball team fell in overtime, 101-90, against Concordia University-Texas in American Southwest Conference crossover play. The loss ends ETBU's 26-game home winning streak which was the longest this year in NCAA Division III. ETBU is now 8-3 and 2-1 in the ASC East.

Junior Mitchell hit nine-of-11 shots from the floor and converted seven-of-nine free throws tying his career-high of 26 points. He also chipped in five rebounds. Bret Atkins contributed 15 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Dylan Augustine totaled 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists, while Jordan Quillian had 12 points and led the team with eight rebounds, three blocks and three steals. For Concordia-Texas, Donovan Ford finished with a game-leading 27 points to go along with five rebounds and two assists.

For the afternoon, ETBU converted 46.8 percent of its shots from the floor (29-of-62). The team hit 56.0 percent of its first-half attempts from the field (14-of-25), including five-of-eight 3-point attempts. In the second half and overtime combined, however, the team hit 40.5 percent of its shots from the floor (15-of-37) and converted three-of-15 from 3-point distance (20.0 percent). From the foul line, ETBU hit 70.6 percent of its shots (24-of-34).

By comparison, Concordia finished with a team shooting percentage of 47.3 percent (35-of-74) and converted 14-of-30 shots from 3-point range (46.7 percent). The team shot 58.6 percent at the foul line (17-of-29). For the day, Concordia held a slight advantage in rebounding, 43-40.

In the opening half, Concordia claimed a 7-0 edge to begin the game and later held an 11-3 advantage five minutes into the action. ETBU clawed its way back, however, tying the score at 22-22 after an Atkins 3-pointer with 9:28 until the half.

Further on down the line, ETBU trailed by a 36-31 margin, but seven-straight points later the team went up by a 38-36 margin with two minutes until halftime. More back-and-forth action ensued, and Concordia held a 46-45 halftime lead.

In the second half, ETBU used an 18-3 run to bolt ahead 63-49 after an Augustine 3-point shot with 15:42 on the clock. Following two-consecutive Mitchell free throws at the 12:04 mark, ETBU held a 65-58 edge. Concordia then went on a 12-3 spurt to move into a 70-68 lead.

In a neck-and-neck battle to the buzzer, the action stood at 84-84 following a pair of Atkins foul shots with 48 seconds remaining in regulation. With less than two seconds left on the game clock, ETBU had a chance to win the game but two free throws were missed which forced the five-minute overtime period.

During overtime, Concordia hit six-of-10 shots from the field, including three-of-six from 3-point range. ETBU by comparison converted two-of-nine shots from the floor and missed all six of its 3-point attempts.

ETBU travels for its next game, playing at Howard Payne (Texas) University on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Brownwood, Texas.
