Box Score ALPINE, Texas – Facing a 12-point halftime deficit, the East Texas Baptist University men's basketball team rallied to prevail over Sul Ross State (Texas) University, 67-64, on Saturday afternoon at the Gallego Center. The victory ups ETBU's record to 9-4 overall and 3-2 in American Southwest Conference competition. Sul Ross State slides to 7-7 and 4-2 within ASC games.
Tyler Day scored a season-high 16 points for ETBU to lead all players. He hit six-of-eight shots from the field, including four-of-seven 3-point attempts. Also in double figures for ETBU was Jordan Quillian, who contributed 15 points, four rebounds and two assists. Dylan Augustine chipped in nine points, three rebounds and three steals, while Wilbert Thomas added four points, a team-high nine rebounds and two assists.
During the second half, ETBU outscored Sul Ross State by a 41-26 margin after trailing by a 38-26 score at the half. After shooting 29.4 percent in the first half (10-of-34), ETBU improved its team shooting to 47.2 percent during the second half (17-of-36). For the day, ETBU's bench players outscored their Sul Ross State counterparts by a 33-21 margin.
With the halftime score 38-26, ETBU went on a 9-2 run to begin the second half and more than slice its deficit to only five points at 40-35 following a successful 3-point shot by Day. But Sul Ross State then countered with a 14-6 spurt to give itself a 54-41 edge with less than nine minutes left in regulation.
ETBU would respond, however, scoring 14-consecutive points to assume a 55-54 advantage. Once again Day bookended ETBU's run with a 3-pointer, this one with 4:42 on the clock. After some back-and-forth action, ETBU claimed the lead for good after CJ Sweet converted a 3-point shot at the 3:42 mark to give ETBU a 61-59 edge.
For Sul Ross State, Caleb Thomasson had 15 points, eight rebounds, two assists and a game-best four blocked shots. Alex Harrison totaled 15 points, seven rebounds and three assists, while Rocky Feliciano added 10 points on five-of-seven shooting from the floor.
ETBU returns to action when it hosts the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (Texas) on Thursday night for a 7:30 p.m. game inside of Ornelas Gym.
