MARSHALL, Texas – Starting then American Southwest Conference crossover season against a west division opponent, the East Texas Baptist University women's tennis defeated visiting University of Texas Dallas, 7-2, on Saturday afternoon at the Veterans Memorial Tennis Complex. With its victory, ETBU is now 5-0 this spring and continues to have their best start in program history.
ETBU took a 3-0 lead after claiming all three doubles flights. Jabree McClaine and Sierra Pizarro teamed up at No. 3 doubles and topped Michaela Gulasy and Kelly Reed by an 8-2 score. In the No. 2-seeded flight, Elizabeth Morton and Tiffany Stankiewicz defeated Sophie Farmer and Emily Nguyen, 8-2. Kate Bramlett and Kayla Casey rounded out ETBU's doubles sweep with an 8-4 victory in No. 1 doubles against Sumvruta Iyengar and Melanie Marlin.
In the singles action, Kellie Cawthon earned ETBU's first point with her 6-0, 6-1 win over Nguyen in the fifth-seeded singles flight. Mullika Seekhieo was a 6-1, 6-0 winner against Reed in No. 6 singles, while McClaine bested Katie Purdum by a 6-2, 6-2 margin in the fourth-seeded match. Bramlett claimed ETBU's final point of the day, defeating Marlin, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7), in the No. 3 singles flight.
With the outcome already determined and ETBU leading by a 7-0 score, Texas Dallas claimed the match's two remaining points with wins in No. 1 and 2 singles.
ETBU returns to action on Feb. 26, playing a neutral-site match against Schreiner (Texas) University in Georgetown, Texas, starting at 2 p.m.
