Box Score 2 MARSHALL, Texas – Hitting three home runs on the day and scoring a total of 13 runs as head coach Janae Shirley hit a career milestone, the #6 East Texas Baptist University softball team swept the University of Texas Dallas (12-10; 9-5), 8-0, and 5-3. ETBU now stands at 17-4 and 10-1 in the American Southwest Conference. The last win of the day became Shirley's 300th career win at ETBU as she is in her ninth season.
Kaitlyn Hollingshead had two home runs and six RBI on the day while Kelly Jo McLendon earned both wins pitching two complete games.
G1: ETBU 8, Texas Dallas 0 (6 Innings)
In the opener, Hollingshead drove in a half dozen runs and Kelly Jo McLendon limited Texas Dallas to only two base hits in a six-inning, 8-0 victory for ETBU. Hollingshead went 2-for-4 with a pair of three-run home runs, while Jayme Perez was 2-for-2 and scored three times.
After two-and-a-half scoreless innings, ETBU broke through in the bottom of the third inning. Perez hit a one-out double to center field, and then Lacey Lindsey was hit by a pitch from Texas Dallas starter Lauren McLeod. Now with runners on first and second and one away, Hollingshead hit a first-pitch, three-run homer to left-center to put ETBU ahead, 3-0.
ETBU later scored twice in the bottom half of the fifth to go up, 5-0, with Jessica Bowden contributing a two-out RBI single. To cap the offensive output in game one, Hollingshead homered off McLeod, this time on a 1-1 pitch and with two down in the bottom of the sixth. Holingshead's home run triggered the run rule and ended the game.
In the circle, McLendon earned the victory with a six-inning, two-hit shutout. She struck out five and walked none. McLeod (8-3) took the loss for Texas Dallas, pitching a complete game. She threw 5 2/3 innings and allowed nine hits and eight runs (seven earned). McLeod struck out six but also hit five batters and walked one.
Game Two: ETBU 5, Texas Dallas 3
During the nightcap, McLendon returned to the circle and pitched a seven-inning complete game to help ETBU claim a 5-3 victory and the sweep. She scattered six hits and gave up three runs (two earned) with two strikeouts and zero walks. McLendon (5-3) has now won her past five pitching decisions.
The score was tied, 2-2, through three-and-a-half innings before ETBU plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth to assume a 5-2 lead.
With Lindsey Vasquez on third base and two outs, Perez sent a 1-0 pitch from Allie Stephens over the fence in left field for a two-run homer. Bowden later hit a 2-2 pitch down the left field line to drive in Vasquez. Texas Dallas did score the final run of the day with Stefanie Polderman contributing a run-scoring single in the top half of the sixth, making it a 5-3 game.
In the final half inning, McLendon retired Melissa Livermore on a groundout to third baseman Bowden to strand a Texas Dallas runner on second and close out the doubleheader sweep for ETBU.
ETBU and Texas Dallas conclude the three-game series on Sunday with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
