MARSHALL, Texas – On its home courts for the first time in over a month, the East Texas Baptist University women's tennis team came up short against Belhaven (Miss.) University, 5-4, on Thursday afternoon at the Veterans Memorial Tennis Complex.
With the result, ETBU is now 9-3 overall this season, while Belhaven improves to 11-4.
In the early going, ETBU grabbed a 2-1 lead following the doubles competition. In the No. 3-seeded doubles flight, Jabree McClaine and Sierra Pizarro topped Brittany Keeling and Ellen Scott by an 8-3 score. At the No. 1 doubles match, Kate Bramlett and Kayla Casey were 8-6 winners against AnneMarie Kimball and Natalia Lopez.
Belhaven rallied, however, winning four-consecutive singles flights to clinch the victory. With the outcome already sealed in Belhaven's favor, ETBU claimed the remaining two points at No. 1 and 6 singles. Mullika Seekhieo defeated Keeling, 6-1, 6-3, in the sixth-seeded singles match, while Casey earned a three-set victory over Kimball at the No. 1 flight, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
ETBU plays next on April 1 at LeTourneau (Texas) University with first serve set for 3 p.m.
