TYLER, Texas – In the quarterfinals of the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament, the East Texas Baptist University women's tennis team moved past the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, 5-0, on Thursday afternoon at the Summers Tennis Center.
With its victory, ETBU improves to 13-4 overall and advances to the semifinals on Friday morning. The team will face the ASC West Division No. 1 seed, Hardin-Simmons University, with the first serve scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Mary Hardin-Baylor drops to 4-11 this spring.
In the doubles competition, ETBU claimed a sweep of the three flights to assume a 3-0 advantage heading into singles play. Elizabeth Morton and Tiffany Stankiewicz earned the first point of the match for ETBU, 8-1, in the second-seeded doubles flight, and then the nationally-ranked pairing of Kate Bramlett and Kayla Casey won by an identical 8-1 margin in the No. 1 match. After falling behind early, Jabree McClaine and Sierra Pizarro rallied and emerged as 8-5 winners in the third-seeded flight.
With the doubles action now finished, the match moved into the singles flights, and McClaine bested her opponent, 6-2, 6-0, in the No. 5 singles match to push ETBU's edge to 4-0. In the third-seeded singles flight, Kate Bramlett clinched the match victory for ETBU with a 6-0, 6-1 win.
ASC East Division No. 2 seed ETBU plays Hardin-Simmons, 10:30 a.m., on Friday at the Summers Tennis Center.
