Box Score 2 PINEVILLE, La. – Splitting the series on day two, the No. 11-ranked East Texas Baptist University softball team fell in game one but took the final game over Louisiana College on Saturday afternoon at Coca-Cola Field. Louisiana College claimed a 5-0 win in the opener but ETBU responded with a 5-3 victory in game two. ETBU is now 26-7 overall and 19-4 in American Southwest Conference games while Louisiana College goes to 17-15 overall and 15-9 in ASC play.
Game One: Louisiana College 5, ETBU 0
In the opener, Louisiana College pitcher Savannah Settle (12-6) threw a complete-game, three-hit shutout, while teammate Kayla Busby hit a three-run home run to account for the final score, 5-0.
With Louisiana College already leading by a 2-0 margin, Busby stepped to the plate with two runners on base and ETBU's Kelly Jo McLendon (9-5) in the circle. On a 2-1 pitch, Busby drilled the ball to the right field wall and after hitting the lip of the structure, the ball cleared the fence. That homer ended McLendon's outing in the circle. She allowed nine hits, five runs (four earned) and struck out two against zero walks.
Game Two: ETBU 5, Louisiana College
Moving over into the nightcap, ETBU fell behind 3-0 after one inning of play. Louisiana College ended ETBU game two starter Jade Sones' outing in bottom half of the opening inning. Still behind by a 3-0 score and hitting in the third, ETBU drew even, 3-3, after a three-run homer off the bat of Jayme Perez.
Lindsey Vasquez led off the half inning with a hit by pitch, and then stole second base. After Linzie Lewis reached safely on an infield single, Perez stepped in the batter's box and hit a 1-1 pitch near the right-field foul pole to make it a tie game, 3-3. ETBU scored the game's final two runs in the top of the sixth, one of them unearned and another run on a two-strike RBI single to right-center by Jessica Bowden.
In relief of Sones, ETBU's Raquel Tello (14-2) earned the victory in the circle. She pitched 6 1/3 innings and limited Louisiana College to three base hits. Tello walked one and struck out three.
ETBU plays next on April 15 at Taylor Field for three games against Sul Ross State (Texas) University. Game one is scheduled for Friday at 4 p.m.
