TYLER, Texas – Pushing one of the American Southwest Conference elites to the brink, the East Texas Baptist University women's basketball team ran out of gas in the final five minutes of the game and fell to the University of Texas at Tyler (15-5, 8-4), 86-73. ETBU was within one with just under five minutes to play before UT Tyler went on a run to take the game. ETBU falls to 3-16 overall this season, and 1-10 in ASC play.
Hannah Holt led all scorers in the game with a career high 28 points, on 7-14 shooting from the floor and 10-10 from the free throw line. Amanda Wilson led ETBU with seven rebounds and finished with 15 points. Sade' Murrell finished the game with 10 points. Brittney Jones, Holt, and Murrell each added five rebounds.
ETBU shot 36.9% from the floor, 30.4% from behind the arc, and 78.3% from the free throw line. ETBU finished with 37 rebounds as a team, 13 assists, and five steals.
ETBU jumped out to an early 8-2 lead over the defending ASC champion UT Tyler, until UT Tyler tied the game up at 18 all to end the first half. The two teams would battle throughout much of the second quarter, forcing two different lead changes, with UT Tyler grabbing a 39-35 lead at the break.
In the second half, ETBU knocked down a three pointer and a basket in the paint to regain the lead 40-39. UT Tyler would grab the lead back on the next possession and would maintain that lead throughout the rest of the third quarter. ETBU would bring the game back within one-point two times midway through the final frame, but UT Tyler would extend the lead on free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
UT Tyler was led by Michelle Obach with 19 points. D'Onna Matthews finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds. UT Tyler shot 90% from the free throw line and 44.4% from the floor. UT Tyler had 12 steals in the game.
ETBU will return to action next Thursday with a rematch against UT Tyler, as they start the second half of ASC East Division play. The game will tipoff at 5:30 p.m. in Ornelas Gymnasium.
