ABILENE, Texas – Opening up the 2017 season in West Texas, the East Texas Baptist University women's tennis team faced regionally ranked Hardin-Simmons University and McMurry University. ETBU is ranked 10th in the latest regional poll while Hardin-Simmons is 12th and McMurry 14th. In the final match of the day, ETBU earned their first win, 8-1, over McMurry.
HSU 5, ETBU 4
ETBU opened the match with a 2-1 lead in doubles but then lost four of the six singles matches falling to HSU, 5-4. Kate Bramlett and Kaleight Smith teamed up at No.1 singles for an 8-4 win over Shayne Cook and Michaela Ellison. Tiffany Stankiewicz and Elisa Kendall then took the No.2 doubles from Kyra Mobley and Jasmine Briant, 8-6. Ashley Schenck and Kellie Cawthon fell to Jenna Smith and Hannah Smith of HSU, 8-4.
In singles play, Stankiewicz won the No.2 singles, 6-3, 6-0, over Cook and Kendall won the No.6 match, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), and 1-0 (10-3). Bramlett fell in a close No.1 singles match, 4-6, 6-1, 3-6 while Smith fell in No.3 singles play, 1-6, 6-2, 2-6.
ETBU 8, McM 1
ETBU swept through doubles play as Bramlett and Smith won over Chloe Patterson and Bree Brosig, 8-2, aat No.1. Stankiewicz and Kendall then took the No.2 doubles, 8-3, from Samantha Ritz and Zayra Gomez while Cawthon and Schenck won the No.3 doubles, 8-6.
Bramlett then won the No.1 singles, 0-6, 6-4, 10-4, over Patterson followed by a Stankiewicz win at No.2 singles, 6-3, 6-1, over Brosig. Mullika Seekhieo won the No.4 singles, 8-5, for the eighth point and then Cawthon took the No.5 singles 6-1, 6-0, for the seventh point. Earning a point also was Kendall at No.6 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Perez.
