Box Score MARSHALL, Texas – The East Texas Baptist University women's basketball team have started the new year in a positive note, topping Rust College 78-48. ETBU moves to 2-10 overall, and Rust drops to 1-14 on the year.
ETBU controlled the game from the 1st quarter on. ETBU and Rust both shot almost equally in the first frame, but the difference was eight made free throws from ETBU which put the Tigers out in front, 19-12 to begin the game. ETBU took a 37-25 lead into halftime, shooting 42% from the floor in the 2nd quarter.
After halftime, ETBU shutdown the Rust offense, allowing only nine points to the Bearcats. ETBU held Rust to 19% shooting in the 3rd quarter, and pushed the lead to 22 points. ETBU would close out the game, scoring 22 points in the final frame to get their second consecutive win, adn their biggest win of the season.
ETBU was led by Malaisia Chisolm who was the lone ETBU player in double-digits with 13 points. 14 of the 16 players that got into the game for ETBU recorded at least two points to spread the ball around. Delia Hopkins led ETBU with nine rebounds.
ETBU had 19 steals in the effort, and forced 30 turnovers altogether. ETBU shot 48.3% from the floor, and 70.8% from the free throw line.
Rust was led by Megan Rayford who scored a game high 17 points, and grabbed a game high 20 rebounds. Jasmine Golden had 10 points and nine rebounds. Rust shot 27% from the field and from behind the arc in the loss.
"It was great to get another win, especially at home. I have been saying all season that we are very talented, but we are also very young. It has taken some time to all come together, but over the last couple weeks leading into Christmas break and out of Christmas break that we have done some really good things. Today was a big win, and it was good for us to play everybody, and for us to rest more players," said head coach Edsel Hamilton after the game.
ETBU will return to action on Saturday with American Southwest Conference action resuming against Louisiana College. The game will have a tip off time of 1:00 p.m.
