BROWNWOOD, Texas - With a 5-1 win over the Howard Payne University Yellow Jackets, the East Texas Baptist University women's soccer team improved their winning streak to seven games and broke the program record for regular season wins at 13. The 13 wins also ties the most wins in a season set in 2005. ETBU is now 13-4-1 overall and 8-2-1 in the American Southwest Conference.
Hannah Murin once again led ETBU in the scoring column garnering two goals. Earning their first goals of the year were
Megan Friend and Cristal Hernandez while
Kristi Freund collected her second goal of the year.
From the start of the game, ETBU was in full control as they applied pressure from the get go. It would take just nine minutes before ETBU would score first from Murin. For the next eighteen minutes, ETBU's chances to add on would be denied by HPU, who could only muster one shot all first half. But ETBU would be rewarded again when
Megan Friend would get the assist from Murin making it, 2-0, in the 28
th minute.
ETBU's momentum continued into the second half when Brady and Reagan Kappler would team up and connect with
Kristi Freund, who made it 3-0 in the 60th minute. Freund would also make an assist just forty-six seconds later when she connected with Murin, who struck her second goal of the game as ETBU opened up the game with a four-goal lead in the 61
st minute. HPU would not be held scoreless for long when they scored in the 66th minute by Morgan Patterson. The Tigers would answer in the 87th minute by Monzon-Hernandez pushing the lead back to four, 5-1.
ETBU finished outshooting HPU, 30-3, which included a 21-1 edge in shots on goal. Murin was the top shooter with seven total shots, including six on goal.
Ashleigh Rondon collected six shots overall and three on goal. HPU saw Patterson, Kaitlyn Harrison, and Lesly Garcia with a shot for the Yellow Jackets. Goalkeeper Nicole Goodwin picked up 16 saves for HPU.
ETBU will finish their regular season on Saturday when they head out to Richardson, Texas, for a showdown with Texas Dallas. The opening kickoff starts at 5:00 PM.
