MARSHALL, Texas – All tied up at 60 with 10:45 left in the game, the Sul Ross State University Lobos (2-0) went on an 11-0 run to take hold of the game as they held off East Texas Baptist University (1-1), 82-80. ETBU hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to pull within two as they received their first loss of the year in a non-conference regional game.
ETBU had five players in double-digits as
Robby Dooley led the way with 16 points.
Westin Riddick hit five three-point field goals for 15 points to lead the team from beyond the arc.
Darrice Whitley and
Nathan Fontenot (five assists) each had 14 points while
Jordan Gosey collected a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. SRSU was led by Caleb Thomasson, who poured in a game high 26 points scoring 20 in the second half.
Collectively, SRSU had the edge in field goal percentage (47.1%-42.3%) while ETBU won the three-point (37.0%-34.8%), free throw (66.7%-57.1%), and rebounding (46-40) battles. Although ETBU scored 18 second chance points to SRSU's four, the Lobos tallied 17 points off turnovers while ETBU managed 12.
After falling behind 5-0 to start the game, ETBU would respond with a 12-2 run to lead 12-7, which included a couple of treys from Riddick. After SRSU would tie the game at 12 before ETBU would race out to a 23-16 lead. The Lobos would not back down as they would fight back and tie the game up at 29. ETBU would extend the lead to 35-31 on baskets by Gosey and Whitley. SRSU would only cut the deficit to 35-34 before ETBU finished with a 6-2 run culminating on a layup by Whitley to end the first half up 41-36.
ETBU continued the momentum as Dooley and Gosey gave ETBU their largest lead of the game at 45-36. That was when the momentum changed as SRSU was led by Thomasson, who keyed a 10-2 run with six points. The next couple of minutes saw both teams exchange leads as ETBU's threes from Dooley, Riddick, and
Dion Mack were answered by a layup from Ross and six more points from Thomasson. The game stayed tight until it was tied at 60-60. SRSU responded with 11 straight points that would prove to be the deciding factor. ETBU did make it a six-point game with under five minutes to play, but key shots from SRSU increased their lead to eight. ETBU could only cut the deficit to two at the buzzer and the Lobos took the win.
