Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas - In a game that took two overtimes to complete, it was
Westin Riddick who stepped up with a clutch three-pointer to give the East Texas Baptist men's basketball team the game-winning points in a 99-92 triumph over Trinity University. This win gave ETBU a 4-2 record overall.
Riddick was the top player for ETBU as he finished with a career-high 33 points on 10-of-17 shooting including eight three-pointers.
Nathan Fontenot (18 points),
Robby Dooley (16 points), and
Landin Brown (15 points) also had incredible performances as they each went into double-figures and shared four assists each. Dooley also had a double-double with 12 rebounds in the contest. For TU, Jayden Holden was the only player to reach 30 points on nine-of-12 shooting. Matt Jones (22 points), Danny Rivara (15 points), and Brooks Mays (12 points) also reached double-digits with Rivara collecting a double-double as he also had 12 rebounds.
Overall, ETBU outshot TU from the field (43.8%-36.8%) and three-point range (45.5%-42.9%) while outbounding TU 55-47. They also had a bench that outscored TU 23-11 and won the assists battle 17-13
For nearly seven minutes from tipoff, both teams exchanged points with neither team having control. Trailing 15-14 with 13:50 left, ETBU took off with a 22-3 run over the next nine minutes to lead 36-18. In the run, Riddick had seven points, which came from a three-pointer at 13:15 and a four-point play at 12:38 while Dooley added four points with free throws (9:23) and a layup at 8:11. Three-pointers also came from
Davis Robinson (7:47) and Fontenot (6:43, 4:31) while
Gavin Sabo also contributed with a layup (10:24). With 2:34 left in the first half, another three by Fontenot gave ETBU their largest lead of the game at 43-21. TU finished the first half with momentum by creating a 9-2 run as ETBU led 45-30 after one half.
Riddick started the second half with a three just ten seconds in to give ETBU a 48-30 lead. But the momentum TU had at the end of the first half carried over as they answered with a 21-2 run of their own for the next six minutes to lead 51-50. For the rest of the half, it became a duel as neither team would build a lead larger than four. ETBU got their four point at 70-66 on a Riddick layup (4:09). TU answered with seven straight points to lead 73-70 after a three by Holden with 1:35 left to go. Free throws (1:08) and a layup by Dooley (0:42) gave ETBU a 74-73 lead only to see TU answer with a three-point play by Jones (0:31) and a 76-74 edge. But Fontenot drew a foul and converted three free throws with 15 seconds left to give ETBU a 77-76 lead. Jones then answered with a layup as TU had an 78-77 lead with eight seconds to play. But TU committed a foul with one second left as Dooley made one free throw to tie the game at 78 and sending it to overtime.
TU started the first overtime with a 4-1 run (5:00-3:39) to lead 82-79 with ETBU's lone point coming from a Dooley free throw (4:07). After Gosey had a tip in (3:15), Danny Rivara extended TU's lead to 84-81 (2:54). Trading points again, ETBU trailed 86-83 with 1:14 left in overtime. Once again, Riddick stepped up and tied the game at 86 with a three with fifty seconds left. Both teams had a chance to win, but were unable to convert as the game moved into a second overtime.
After a scoreless minute, Matthew Colliflower converted free throws at 3:48 to give TU an 88-86 lead. But this overtime belonged to Riddick, who answered with the first of 10 points with a three just twelve seconds later.
Jordan Gosey extended the lead to 91-88 (2:24) only to see Holden tie the game at 91. However, Riddick delivered the three-pointer that would prove be the game-winner with 1:26 to play. TU could only get as close as 94-92 on a free throw by Holden (0:47). Riddick would then seal the 99-92 win with four of ETBU's final five points.
ETBU will now play Southwestern tomorrow at 7:00 PM.
