MARSHALL, Texas- Riding the momentum of a three-game winning streak, the East Texas Baptist University men's basketball team will battle Schreiner University on Dec. 29 and Texas Lutheran on Dec. 30 coming off the Christmas break. ETBU is currently 6-2 overall and will face both Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) teams at Schreiner University.
Schreiner sits at 3-4 on the season coming into Friday's meeting with ETBU. In the overall series, the Tigers are 11-6 against the Mountaineers, with the last victory coming in 2015, 84-73. Keenan Gumbs leads Schreiner's attack, averaging 21.0 points and 7.6 rebounds per game.
The final matchup of the tournament features a contest with the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs on Saturday. In the all-time series, the Bulldogs hold the decisive edge against the Tigers, going 20-13 in the first 33 meetings. ETBU last defeated TLU, 80-73, in 2014. Nathan Josephs leads TLU, averaging 18.1 points per game on the season.
Leading the attack for the Tigers is
Robby Dooley, averaging 20.7 points per game this season. Dooley tied a career-high for the third time this season, scoring 23 points in a win over Hendrix College on Dec. 18. Second on the team is three-point marksman
Westin Riddick, with 14.1 points, connecting on 44 percent shooting from beyond the arc.
Freshman guard
Nathan Fontenot ranks third on the team with 10.9 points through the first eight games.
Landin Brown patrols the point guard position, tallying 9.6 points and 4.4 assists. Brown also leads ETBU in steals, averaging 2.5 per contest this season.
Heading into a stretch of nine of the next ten games on the road, Head Coach
Brandon Curran talked about the importance of trusting each other in difficult times.
"Things are not always going to be easy. We're playing a lot of good teams. We've got to continue to trust the Lord in everything no matter what happens. We're going to continue to encourage and support each other and stick together," Curran said.
