RECAP: ETBU Splits Double Header Against UTD

RICHARDSON, Texas – The #5 East Texas Baptist University softball team split the American Southwest Conference double header against the University of Texas at Dallas, winning game one, 4-2, but then falling ing game two, 3-2. ETBU is now 18-4 and 11-4 in American Southwest Conference play. UTD is now 19-5 and 12-3 in ASC play.

GAME 1 l ETBU 4, UTD 2

Lindsey Vasquez put ETBU on the board first when she scored on a passed ball in the top of the first inning. Gabby Gonzales connected on a homerun to left field to give ETBU a 2-0 lead. UTD tied the game with a two-run homerun in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jayme Perez singled home Linzie Lewis to give ETBU a 3-2 lead. Shelby Irlbeck drove home the final run of the game to secure an ETBU win.

Lewis, Perez, Gonzales, and Kaitlyn Hollingshead each had one hit for ETBU to lead the team. Jordan Anderson pitched seven innings and picked up the win to move to 6-0 on the season. Anderson allowed two runs on three hits and struck out seven batters.

Sara Davison received the loss to move to 2-2, pitching seven innings and allowed four runs on five hits. Vlasek had two hits for the Comets including the homerun.

GAME 2 l UTD 3, ETBU 2

For the second time in three games, UTD defeated ETBU with a walk-off hit. The bats were silenced for both teams until the fourth inning when Hollingshead singled home Brea Robinson to give ETBU a 1-0 lead. UTD tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single from Heather Gilbert. Irlbeck used an infield single to drive home Vasquez in the top of the eighth inning. UTD again responded with a run in the eighth inning to tie the game up, and ended the game in the ninth with a walk-off double.

Vasquez had two hits to pace the ETBU offense. Five other Tigers would get one hit each in the form of Irlbeck, Lewis, Perez, Gonzales, and Hollingshead. Anderson was given the loss as she pitched 8.2 and allowed three runs on eight hits, while also striking out seven more batters in game two. Anderson is now 6-1 on the season after going 1-1 today against UTD.

UTD was led by Gilbert with two hits. Six other Comets would get one base hit, including Ravin Wilson with the walk-off double. Lauren McLeod moves to 12-1 after the win, throwing seven hits and two runs, striking out seven batters.

ETBU will return to action next weekend against Concordia University at Taylor Field. The series will begin on Friday at 5:00 p.m. with a single game, and will resume the action on Saturday with a double header beginning at 12:00 p.m.
