Box Score TYLER, Texas – In the opening game of the American Southwest Conference softball championship Tournament, #10 East Texas Baptist University fell victim to #12 the University of Texas Dallas in the final two innings, 5-2. ETBU now has to play an elimination game on Friday at 10:00 a.m. vs. the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
Jayme Perez led ETBU with three hits going 3-of-3 with one run scored. Lacey Lindsey and Linzie Lewis both added two hits, also. Gabby Gonzales and Kaitlyn Hollingshead each recorded a RBI. Jordan Anderson went the distance receiving the loss and had seven strikeouts.
ETBU took a 2-0 lead with a run scored in the second and fifth innings. Hollingshead sacrifice fly to left field in the second inning made it 1-0. Gonzales then made it 2-0 in the fifth inning on a single to left field that scored Heaven McDonald. It was after the fifth inning that Texas Dallas bats woke up. With two outs in both innings, Texas Dallas scored two in the sixth to tie the game and three in the seventh for the 5-2 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, ETBU had the bases loaded with no outs but could not find the hit to bring in the runs. Overall, ETBU left 12 runners on base which was the difference in the game.
ETBU now will be playing out of the loser's bracket as they face UMHB at 10:00 a.m. on Friday morning.
