@ETBU_Soccer Falters in ASC Opener

MARSHALL, Texas – Opening up American Southwest Conference play at Cornish Field, the East Texas Baptist University men's soccer team was unable to put the ball in the net as they fell to the Concordia University-Texas Tornadoes, 3-0. The loss ends a two-match winning streak and puts ETBU at 2-2-1 and 0-1 in the ASC.

"Tonight was a tough game that we didn't give ourselves a chance.  We didn't show up and play the way we can and know how to.  We started flat, quiet, and allowed Concordia free range.  It's a 90 minute game and we have to learn to play all 90 minutes with the same desire, passion, and heart," said head coach Chris Crawford. "Good thing for us we get to put this behind us and move onto the next one and fix it quickly."

ETBU and Concordia-Texas held each other defensively to zeroes for the first 27 minutes of the match. It wasn't until the 28th minute when Alejandro Labastida picked up the Tornadoes first goal on an assist by Jason Sac-Vertiz. Seven minutes later, Labastida tallied his second of the game giving Concordia-Texas a 2-0 lead going into halftime. The second half saw 25 scoreless minutes played by both teams until Labastida completed his hat trick with a penalty kick making it 3-0.

ETBU was unable to get anything going offensively as they were outshot 9-5 (6-1 in shots on goal). Michael Andrews, Dominic Wood, Danilo Martins, Tristan Gonzalez, and Silas Sangano (one shot on goal) all had a shot for ETBU. Bryant Botello made three saves throughout the entire 90 minutes he played. Lambastida's three goals made him the leader in shots and shots on goal while goalkeeper Rob Oakley made one save.

ETBU will look to rebound this Saturday when they host Mary Hardin-Baylor at 7:30 p.m. in ASC play.
